Eccinachea (sp?) is meant to be good.

I usually go for a combo of pints of Ribena and Panadol and glasses of iced tea.

Stay off anything dairy, it encourages mucus creation.

I think Lucozade is meant to be good for colds as it boosts energy Shocked ?

Might get some of those over-advertised pills that you always see on TV, wonder if they work Thinking

Dairy thing is noted though and I won't be buying any chocolate drinks today Sick

Not sure if they sell Eccinachea at Tesco? And I'd feel stupid asking for it as I can't say it let alone know what it is Laughing

Thanks B Thumbs Up

Ek-in-ay-she-ah.

It's a 'natural remedy', comes in tablets. Tesco have them on the shelf with all the other cold & flu stuff.

I had the worse cold in years 4 weeks ago - the only thing that got close to touching it was Day Nurse.

This winter (I say winter as summer has not arrived!), I've had the flu twice and a chest infection!

Thing is, until this winter I never got ill!!! Crying or Very sad

Best stuff i've found, was Beechams max power Razz powders, they don't taste very nice but do the job! You're supposed to take them with water but I just take mine with a flavoured drink like cordial, not fizzy stuff though.

Keep warm, eat food three times a day...have onions, garlic and ginger in your foods. Drink plenty fluids (flush out the crap) and take Vitamin C & Zinc Lozenges (Holland & Barrett) and a couple of Echinacea drops in water each morning.

Remember the saying feed a cold, starve the flu

Hot lemon and Honey and lots of warmth and rest is the best thing to cure a cold.

Along with some paracetemol to get rid of aches and such like. Smile.

Vitamin C, hayfever pills (to reduce the swelling of your nasal bits) a warm bed, lots of sleep, a DVD or 2, and someone bringing you cups of tea.

Worked for me!

If I feel a cold coming on I take one of thost effervescent vitamin C pills per day - they contain some stupidly high RDA but it really does the job. They're cheap too.
But you'll never kill the cold - the ice age is coming I tell thee!

Mad That'd be cool to laze around at home with someone waiting on me making tea, but I have to work and can't stand lazing around doing nothing anyway. And I prefer to make my own cups of tea Shocked but still work despite being ill.

I wouldn't recommend Lucozade as apparantly it is a dehydration agent. Water I guess is quite important for the body during a cold for natural energy. Try looking out for some natural sugars...An apple a day keeps the doctor away I think is the quote. Wink

Clapping Top advise! However when buying the zinc lozenges read the ingredients list carefully, Only zinc ascorbate, gluconate and glycinate seem to work against colds, Thumbs Up (also sorbitol, mannitol or citric when combined with saliva make zinc ineffective so avoid Eh? ).

As said Vit C (1000mg three times a day for 3 days should do it....reduce if diarrhea develops), Echinacea (Easily found in health stores, and when tabs taken daily reduce risks of getting a cold dramatically, I swear by the stuff), Zinc, Garlic and even St John's Wort will boost the immune system a treat! The benefits wont be immediate, but the long term benefits with continued use will see you through winter cold free Wink

Also, other things that can be done are putting a few drops of eucalyptus oil in hot water makes a great decongestant, and elderflower tea for catarrhal troubles. Razz

Apparently a recent study showed that Echinacea had little effect on getting rid of a cold. It's never made any difference to the colds I've had Confused

I take garlic and vitamin C when I get a cold, and pill-wise I'd definitely recommend lemsip max strength capsules. Those during the day, Night Nurse at night, that'll sort it!

Colds and Flu are both respiratory infections and as echinacea is one of the best remedies for microbial infections I would greatly recommend them....they will not necessarily have any effect on the outward symptoms but they do wonders on the inside. After all, prevention is better than cure, and prevention is what this little herb excels at when it comes to cold. Very Happy

yes that is what I had heard until I read this article about a study that had been done:

Quote:

In the study, 108 patients took part in a double-blind study where half were given the echinacea abstract and the rest a placebo-juice substitute twice a day. All the subjects had a history of three or more colds or respiratory infections in the preceding year.

After eight weeks, there were no significant differences in the echinacea and the placebo group, although more than half of the people in each group had at least one cold. The researchers concluded that echninacea use did not decrease the incidence, duration or severity of colds or respiratory ailments.

This was a good clinical study that looked at participants’ symptoms along with physical exams to determine how effective echinacea was compared to the placebo.

Despite this and other studies, many people will still take the word of a clerk at the health food store that echinacea is effective against colds and respiratory infections. My point is that clinical studies are what we should be looking at when buying this or other herbal supplements.

Some herbal products are undoubtedly beneficial, but many product claims are not based on scientific evidence. It’s becoming pretty clear through numerous studies that echinacea is not a cure for the common cold.

Source: American Journal of Medicine, 1999; 106:138-143

Quote:

In their report, the researchers concluded that, "compared with placebo, unrefined echinacea provided no detectable benefit or harm in these college students who had the common cold."

There have been other studies on how echinacea has prevented the cold. They have shown a 10 per cent reduction in cold incidences.

"If those studies were true and you took Echinacea for two and a half years, you might prevent a cold," warns Dr. Bruce Barrett, one of the authors of the study.

"I'm not completely convinced that there…aren't populations or specific Echinacea preparations that would work, but in our study we didn't find any benefit."

I often find this with herbal remedies, that while they work for some people they don't work for others. Like I said, I've tried using echinacea and it's never made any difference for me. But obviously it works for some people or those of you here wouldn't be singing it's praises!

(it's other main flaw is that, if you have to take it constantly for it to have an effect, it either tastes horrible or the pills are huge...)

Shocked So many different things to try out... but by the time I make it to chemist and sort these things out I'll be feeling better anyway Laughing

I think I'll just leave it... not that bothered really I can put up with it, just was annoying me this morning at time of posting as I could barely breath... but a short walk in the fresh air, some cold relief pills a bottle of lucozade and an egg and cress sandwich seemed to make me feel better for an hour or so.

T'is only a cold it'll go away just damn annoying when sat trying to get work done (Honest guv!)
