best luggage for a sportbike?

I'm off on a 5 day trip later this year on my gsxr k4.

What are the best options for luggage?

Soft pannier? renntec rack? Just strap stuff on?

I've bought a kriega r20 but after trying it on i'm not that keen! I'll probably sell it if anyone is intersted, not even been used.

anyway, any advice would be great, i appreciate touring on a gsxr isnt ideal but thats my choice and i'm happy with it lol.

I go with a sportsrack with an ortleib drybag bungeed to it. Possibly with an additional drybag bungeed to the pillion. Sometimes a tankbag too.

I'm going off throwovers of sports bikes after a couple of incidents recently (one getting jammed in the rear wheel, the other getting blasted to bits by the exhaust).

Ventura systems work well on gsxrs I've heard, I'm a big fan of get whatever I can on the bike....my motto is if the guy behind can see me then I haven't strapped enough gear on the bike.

Soft panniers, renntec tail rack, and bunggee everything else works for me.

5 day trip could be anything from toothbrush, credit card and spare undies, to glamping with all food and water included.

washbag
sleeping bag
all docs needed
spare bulb kit
bottle of water
spare gloves

maybe a small toolkit

just the basics really. a friend is carrying tent and stove.

I'm going to france so if I've missed anything I need them a heads up would be great

Got a friend who had the Oxford Lifetime X50 panniers and X30 tailback on his CBR600 and said they were brilliant. They're soft panniers and tailback that are designed to go together, and designed with sports bikes in mind.

I'm looking to get some for my bike actually, along with the X30 tank bag.

IIRC the Oxford X60s came 2nd in the Ride test and got a recommended triangle, the X50s are only slightly smaller, but look and fit much better from what I've seen of pictures.

For a 5 day ride to and from a friends wedding in Tuscanny I used an Oxford expandable pack.This was stable at well over double the UK NSL and never came loose.

For my 2 euro tours I've used Oxford First Time luggage. I don't bother with rain covers but line all bags with thick plastic rubble sacks from Wickes. I bought the Oxford stuff second hand for £30 and the Louis 30L Roll Bag (similar to Lomo) cost me about a tenner. My tent, compressed sleeping bag and self inflating sleeping mat fit in the roll bag. Works well.

I'd say use a good expandable tank bag (most of your gear will go in here). Then bungy the sleeping bag and roll up sleeping matt onto the pillion seat pad. For all the other stuff, maybe things like spare shoes, food/drinks I would use a small but comfortable rucksack.

I hate throwover panniers on sportsbikes, and find them hard to get secured properly and filled evenly. they also make the bike wider than it needs to be, and there's the possiblility of burning your luggage on the pipe etc.

I went to France for 10day trips twice, and just took a big tankbag, and a rucksack, which was ample. if you take a cargo net and bungies then you can if I need anything extra strap them on the bike as required. Also having a small rucksack is a bonus when your away and staying somewhere, and just want to go for a day long ride out or to the beach and back etc.

The tank bag is only ever a pain at fill up time, and even then it's much nicer to use than a big bulky tailpack, which I left at home in favour of the rucksack. After a 600mile first day with 3-4fuel stops, the rest of the time I found the tank bag no hassle and it's quite nice and a secure feeling knowing all your stuff is on the tank safely in front of you and isn't going anywhere even at 80-90mph etc.
