My wife and I have settled on a rough plan for a tour in May, visiting Leeds (my wife has been and I haven't), Edinburgh (vice versa) and the Highlands (first time for both of us). I'm looking for any suggestions/experiences on hotels and B&Bs?

May 1: home (Greater London) to Leeds. Can anyone suggest a hotel that isn't a nightmare to ride to and is convenient (walk-able) to the centre and any attractions?

May 2: Leeds to Edinburgh. Ditto? Any good experiences with hotel/B&Bs in that area? In the cities, we're not looking at riding around much. We're just looking to park at the hotel and then explore on foot.

May 4: Edinburgh to a B&B in Ballachulish (near Glencoe) that was recommended on here: https://www.strathassynt.com/. Using this as a base to explore the area for a few days.

May 9: Ballachulish to somewhere Hadrian's Wall-related. I'm a history buff and like all things Roman, so looking to make a visit here on the way back and stay a night in the area. Again, looking for accommodation recommendations.

May 10: Hadrian's wall to the Peak District. We'll probably stay at an expensive "spa/gourmet" kind of place that we've stayed at before (Losehill Hotel) for one night of pampering before heading home. But open to any suggestions.

May 11: Peak District to home.

With regard to hotels in Leeds, parking could be an issue, many hotels in Leeds centre don't have carparks. There are some B&Bs outside the centre and you can jump on a bus into the centre or ride in, there's quite a lot of bike parking in the centre

When going from Leeds to Edinburgh, do NOT just blast up the A1. Turn off at Newcastle and go A698 -> A69A68 up over the Carter Bar.

Likewise when going Edinburgh to Ballachulish do not go on the A82 up Lochlomondside.

Go M90, B914, A823 then A822 to Crieff then A85 to Lochearnhead.

You can thank me later.

I hate driving in Leeds. However, if you want to then there's the Radisson Blu in the centre. Just follow the inner loop and park in 'The Light'. Underground car park with good security, parking discount when staying at hotel (also part of 'The Light' mall).

Stayed there a few times and excellent for the centre of Leeds. However, if just wanting a bed for the night then probably over budget. It's the secure parking that you might have an issue with finding.

Hadrian's wall related I've stayed at The George Hotel at Chollerford (see map here). Handy for Hadrian's Wall (it's at the end of the military road) so can get to the likes of the forts like Housesteads and the garrison at Vindolanda.

A nice stay and nice to sit out by the river, but a wedding was on when we were there. Again not sure of your budget, I'm sure there'll be B&B alternative nearby.

On cost, we're not too sensitive. This is a 25th anniversary trip (albeit greatly postponed from last Oct), so it's not like you get many of those. We're looking to spend a night or two in a four-star around our birthdays (May 8th and 10th), but otherwise happy with decent B&B or two/three star hotels.

On Leeds, I haven't clue. Never been there. My wife has, on several business trips, but hasn't had time to look around much. I'm not looking for a show or anything, we get plenty of that in London. Not clubs, either. We're grandparents. A walk, a cathedral or exhibit to look at, nice dinner, pub, and a stumble back to the hotel... That kind of thing. We're pretty boring. Embarassed

We live about six miles from Leeds, let me have a think and I'll post something up

As for things to do I think you will find plenty to see and do once you are there.
The Queens Hotel and Marriot Hotel are both nice and right in the middle of everything. There are Travelodge and Ibis at the cheaper end and lots in between. Living so close to Leeds we dont often stay there. Trip Advisor is your friend in cases like this.
Oh and bye the way we make a mean cuppa at our house Smile

Any reason what you are going to Leeds instead of York,

York is a much nicer city, IMHO, stay at the Hotel Du Vin.

For Hadrians Wall, this place is a couple of hundred yards from the wall. https://www.twicebrewedinn.co.uk/home.html

Seriously, go to York instead. You've got the Minster, various other monuments like Clifford's Tower, The Shambles, museums, etc. and it's a much nicer place all round. I'm an old git, and there's plenty for me to do and see in York, whereas Leeds is just your conventional big city without much of interest in the centre - unless your wife is going to drag you round the shops.

Yes. Thinking about it, this would avoid any static speed cameras. A7 ll the way up though. Don't believe the signs that'll try to take you back onto the A68 just before Galashiels. Go THROUGH Galashiels.

This hotel sounds good, but wondering if The Light allows motorcycles? There's no mention on the web site. A lot of parking garages around me don't allow motorcycles, so it would be a bummer to book this hotel and discover when we got there that we have to park the bike six blocks away in a side street somewhere.

This is a rough plan. We haven't booked hotels yet, just the time off of work. Last May, we did a tour including the Yorkshire Dales, the Lakes District and the Moors as far as Whitby. It was wonderful, but the days we planned were a bit too long. Two up, often in the rain, on a naked urban commuter bike...we were too knackered at the end of some of the days. We want this one to be leisurely paced, so we picked Leeds more or less randomly as a bit more than half way to Scotland. York is nearby, so we might try that too or go there on another trip. Nothing is set in stone.

Not been to Leeds, but another recommendation for York here. A lovely town, with a car park right next to the castle (more just a grassed mound, but didn't look too closely that time), and an easy stroll from there to the Minster - spectacular, and well worth a visit.

I made York from London at about lunchtime, and after a bit of exploration, rode a bit further north to a campsite near Byland Abbey. Don't know about hotels, but that was within easy reach of Rievaulx Abbey, which I visited first thing next morning. Then on up to Whitby by lunch again. A look around the abbey, and then on up to Bamburgh Castle, reached at early evening (just too late to visit properly, alas). Then Lindisfarne Island next morning, before the ride to the northern end of Loch Lomomd.

So the whole northern part of my ride was based on these places I wanted to see, not too much mileage each day, but leaving time to look around the points of interest. Wasn't too tired at the end of each day, thoroughly enjoyed it and this was camping all the way, hotels of course will be more relaxing.

Good suggestion but be aware B&Bs (and small hotels) in York have a 2 nights stay minimum. This might only apply to weekend stays but worth checking.

If York is an option then if you need recommendations I'll ask my relatives who've stayed there when they came over from Carlisle to visit us (drop me a PM if info needed).

Good luck finding a cheap Hotel in Edinburgh around May. Most double in price around then as not many have security for the bike. Look for B&B's around 2 mile circle from the centre. Monto street area has lots and some have car parks round the back.

Meh. I parked big bikes on-street in Edinburgh for years in the solo MC bays (or which there are plenty) and they were never touched. A small bike will grow wings and fly away as soon as your back's turned but anything 500cc+ tends to be left alone.

Never had one stolen myself however I would not leave it overnight on the likes of George street or say Lothian road. Not so much getting stolen but more of the drunks clambering over it. Never had one vandalised either but that may be due to thinking where I leave it overnight. I did live in some dodgy parts of Edinburgh most of my life and the worst thing ever was getting my mirrors stolen in the 80's but it seemed to be the norm around that time. Nick some other blokes. No one seemed to ever buy them new. Give it time you would nick your old ones back.

That's just what I was thinking. Apart from the Royal Armouries and Elland Road (as a long suffering Leeds United fan), there's nothing to see, although the night life and restaurants are good.

York's much nicer and only about 3.5 hours up the A1/A64 from London.

Check the Premier Inn website as their sale is still on. I was looking for my birthday in Feb and the central one next to Haymarket station which has a car park round the back was only £29. It was about £100 when I stopped there on business last year.

Edit: Just had a look and it's £70 odd mid-week and £100+ on a weekend. Good location though.

If you are going to stay in Yorkshire I'd personally either stay in York or Harrogate and miss out Leeds, unless you like big modern cities.

Both Harrogate and York are popular tourist destinations so have plenty of B&B and Hotels.

For your route north I'd do this route, if going from Harrogate
