The only politician I've ever respected. RIP Tony.

None of the current crop of shysters, masquerading as MP's, are fit to lick his boots.

He, famously, quit the house of commons to "concentrate on politics", never a truer word spoken in last 30 years!

He stuck to his convictions throughout, despite the shitstorm the media heaped on him his whole career!

One of the, very, few decent politicians we've ever had!

RIP

Well, he is now. [BOOM-TISH]

Ironically, Viscount Stansgate actually made a pretty good case for why we'd probably be better off being run by hereditary toffs with nothing to prove, rather than by ladder climbing oiks who will do and say anything to keep their power, job and perks.

He was a 'silver spoon' person who dedicated his life to helping the working man.

Nothing but respect for him.

Mine's a funny list: George Galloway, Tony Benn, John Prescott (i'm northern and I would have punched that bloke), but I also like Borris.

And I voted Tory last time...............

I have attended rallies where he has spoken and I've always admired and respected him.
I don't agree with a word that he said but he always came across as a decent, likeable, honourable man and that's not something that can be said about many 'lefties'.

He falls into the category of "Decent human being" rather than "Politician" in my book.

A sad loss to the human race.

Watching the TV earlier and seeing that Milliband guy falsely wittering on about him yet coming across as though someone only just told him who he was two minutes before the interview. Even Cameron seemed more genuine tbh.

There needs to be a degree of both the "oiks" to push things forwards and the "toffs" to apply reasoning to it. Hence why a fully elected house of lords is a pretty bad idea, there have been some motions that reduce personal privacy squashed there simply as one example.

An elected or appointed 2nd chamber is indeed a waste of time as it will just become an echo chamber.

Me, I'd go for appointment by lottery. You'd get an actually representative selection, and if most appointees didn't bother showing up or voting, that would hardly be worse than the current situation.

My favourite Wedgie Benn quote was "An educated, healthy and confident nation is harder to govern."
