I'm going to view a '99 Suzuki GSX750F (commonly known as the "teapot"!) tomorrow with the intention of buying it if it checks out ok……

I'll obviously be looking at the usual bits and bobs and condition of the consumables but does anybody know of any specific problems with this model that I should keep an eye out for?

Only memorable fault with my old 600f was the joint on the exhaust.

Watch out for your credibility, it will sink to zero along with your self esteem.

I think they are a bit of an underrated bike in this country, think its New Zealand who have a forum where I used to get info and they are more highly rated over there.

Oh swap the tailpiece for the later one, much tidier.

If you are keeping your eye out for problems, I would suggest putting it back in and having a look... Sick

Other than that;

exhaust
electrics
suspension
rotten fasteners
repeat ad infinitum
brakes are suspect if not fastidiously cared for(hey ho, same for a lot)
dunno if gearbox has issues.. mixed reports, but I would give Thumbs Up IME

Buy as cheap as possible, you won't get it back on resale. But don't buy a dog.

cheap as fuck way to do ton+ mileage if you buy a good one. Underrated, but only coz it is fugly. Thumbs Up

Bern:

Gearbox's in general are apparently solid, precise and problem free.

You are right about the brakes though - they are a common issue if neglected - will give them a good lookin' over, with my eye in! Wink

As for the looks - these machines are like Marmite. People regularly slate the aesthetics of these bikes, but I actually quite like it. Each to their own hey.

t121anf:

Thanks for the heads up about the New Zealand forum - I will have a search over there for any info.

Has anyone on here actually owned one of these or their little brother the GSX600F and have any info to pass on?

There is very little that goes wrong with them, they are heavy but capable with a solid engine that will last if looked after. Electrics can suffer from corrosion and the plugs cut out if they get too wet, easy to sort. Frames can rust from the inside out same as the tank.

Common with most bikes maintenance is the key. Bearing can seize in the swingarm, headstock and wheels. The original shock will likely be screwed by now. If it looks a dog then it probably is.

Consumables are going to eat into the budget if they need replacing. Tyres £120- £150 a pair, chain and sprockets £50 - £100, Plugs £15, oil and filter £20, pads £25. Consider asking the seller to drop the price to cover the cost.

Parts are cheap and it's very easy to work on.

finish is iffy, but mechanically they are very good.

The engine is basically an early GSXR750 engine in a milder state of tune and is one of the best motors suzuki has produced.
