A tale of a woe.

I really should know better by now.

My Pan european exhaust cracked last week.

After spending much time trying and failing to weld it with an arc welder Embarassed Tut Tut

And setting myself on fire

https://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Marmalade43/ST1100_Parts/4D4D8E70-5EA5-4D0D-9B89-7C04A2EE3A8F_zpsurw9vtwv.jpg

I admitted defeat and hunted for a replacement.

All the used headers are around £160-£180 so I ordered a new set from Sandy Motorcycle spares yesterday £225

This morning, the box arrived, sparkly stainless headers and collector.

Fitted it, start it up and I have a blow near the head so took off the right one, checked the gasket and refitted it, still blowing.

Removed again and found a hole from an incomplete weld.

Repacked the faulty pipe, awaiting for an exchange tomorrow. I was hoping to be able to get out working on the bike today. Sad

Brool story co?

To be fair, had no end of problems with Samdy bike spares pipes in the past. Usually quite good at sending out replacements although my problems were from a bad mould and missing mounts.

No real excuse for missing welds tough!

I was looking at Sandy Motorcycle spares downpipes for my Fazer since the collector box is riddled with holes.

For the price, i'm happy with the quality of the collector and other pipe, I saved £100 on the next closest price.

FWIW, I got a new full exhaust from Sandy last month since my (original) system was collapsing into a heap of rust - far cheaper than any other options and didn't have any issues.

The couriers did their best to destroy the package, but although the box had clearly been attacked by a rabid dog, the exhaust had been pretty well packaged and survived fine.

Just out of interest, I checked out their GPZ500 downpipes, and...

https://i.ebayimg.com/t/KAWASAKI-GPZ-500-GPZ500S-GPZ500-S-exhaust-downpipes-frontpipes-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/mTUAAOxyZqhRilaC/$T2eC16ZHJH8E9qSEWym+BRil,CG(1Q~~60_12.JPG

... jolly good show.

They've done them in a single piece without the daft join in the original individual pipes that always causes problems. A simple, sensible change that shows they've put a bit of thought into the issue. Thumbs Up

They could have put that much thought into the er5 where they route the pipes under the sump plug leaving about 5mm clearance.

Headers must be removed to drain the oil, because of this, any time sandys are mentioned, I want to stab them with a teaspoon.

Now you mention that, I thought that was the case with the sump plug on my XJ600 after fitting the new exhaust, but I did just about manage to get the plug off with a spanner - no room for a socket, but it did come off.

I don't understand Confused
The downpipes (headers) on Pan are stainless as standard.
They seem to last forever.
How did they get into that state?

I'd expect the collector box and back bits to go.
A stainless replacement for that is generally the default (depends how long you keep the bike and miles done).

They are still solid, the rust is on the surface only, it has just snapped, I checked the bike hadn't been knocked over and put back up.

The collector is pretty much rust free and the left pipe is in much better condition than this right one.

It's on 100,000 miles now so it's not unexpected to have stuff breaking, I've never had one break, but have replaced one set of headers on someone else's pan when they rusted out at the collector.

Differing grades of stainless corrode at different rates.

Remember also that stainless isn't corrosion PROOF, but it just corrodes at a slower rate than mild steel

The metal is still solid, with just the surface rust as in the pics, obviously they are not solid at the breaks.

Thought people were intelligent enough to realise that. Wink

Replacement pipe arrived, Had a good look round it before fitting and it's now on, solid and quiet.
Oil and filters arrived not long after so it's back together and ready to go.

The service has been fine, sandy has an actual phone number that isn't a premium rate and you speak directly to actual people who sort out your problem.

None of this, 'send us the pipe and we'll have a look at it and if it's faulty we'll send another'

They just sent me one for the courier to exchange.

I'd use them again.

I've had a set on my FZR for a few years and the quality has been fine.
The fit was a little off as I had to cut away a small amount of the fairing where they stick forward further then the OEM downpipes.
Still considering how cheap they are compared to some other aftermarket exhausts its not a massive issue.

Did you experience any holes in the low/mid-range without an exup valve? Been thinking about a new set for my FZR400RR.

Yeah it makes it feel a little flat at lower revs, it feels like it pulls a little better at higher rpm but that could just be an illusion because of the missing low down power.
At the time I was doing a lot of trackdays and thought I'd probably use the bike for that and get a more sensible road bike but I kinda got a bit bored of them so just carried on using the FZR as my road bike.

My old downpipes rotted anyway so I bought the sandy bike ones as I need some new ones quickly. Unless you're having problem with your exup valve I'd probably try and keep it in place if it's mainly a road bike.
I still have the electrical part of mine connected as disconnecting it put the bike into some kind of safety mode with a really low rev limiter Confused
