So, it looks like I'm going to be off to Glasgow with the gf in a few months.

Talk to me about living there. My mum's from Renfrew, and I spent a couple of years there when I was a kid but I don't remember it that much.

Rent seems to be fairly cheap for decent areas and places, compared to down Sarf East anyway. I can find work anywhere, catering is universal, so no problems for me.

Any areas to avoid living in, what's the security like for storing a bike etc? Public transport good or expensive or what have ye?

Cheers

Glasgow? Sorry, no real suggestions, I personally wouldn't stay within the city limits. It's all stuuudents, neds, prozzies and diversities as far as I'm concerned. Leafy suburbs for my closed mind. Folded arms

This just came up on the Scotchland group, which you may want to join.

There's been some professional (blokes in a van) motorcycle thefts reported from the East End recently. Pushbikes will go quicker than Guy Martin's slipstreaming record run.

Motorcycle parking in the city centre bays seems OK though. No reported thefts, and I see a lot of newish bikes with nothing more than a "please don't nick me" disk lock on them, if that.

Actually pretty decent, the Cooncil is quite communist. Train, bus, underground, plenty of zonecard stylee options.

It's not a bad place to live, to be honest. Lots of eating and entertainment options, easy enough to get around.

Why not move to Renfrew? It's a ten minute drive to Glasgow, YER MAWs there and you still have Braehead shopping centre round the corner if you fancy a shop without the city centre hassle.

Will probably be a wee bit cheaper too.

There are a few areas with a bad reputation like Easterhouse but that doesn't mean your average joe gets stabbed walking to the shop, the violence is generally between the 'gangs' (if you could call the wee shites that).

But yeah, I'd have a look at some surrounding places first.

Bring many jumpers.

I moved up here in January (living in Royston), and I've left my bike unchained and uncovered and so far the only thing that's happened to it is someone flicked the killswitch (which after trying to start it for 5 minutes before realising backfired like a rifle shot Twisted Evil )

Public transport is pretty much the same as everywhere else

Avoid moving to anywhere in the East End (although I grew up in Easterhouse and Garthamlock and found it entertaining most evenings)

Get used to eating everything deep fried (including salad)

Buy shares in your bikes fork seal manufacturer

Most roads are good for at least double the speed limit (just remember the cameras are dark blue from the front)

Oh and Rangers = blue, Celtic = green Thumbs Up

All bits have good and bad. Historically it was best to avoid...

East End - Dennistoun, Parkhead, Shettleston, Cranhill, Easterhouse, Barlanark
South Side - Castlemilk
Mid Town - Possil, Milton

and so on ...

I find that hard to believe Shocked
The stock answer for anyone not living in Manchester is Man. Utd surely? Confused Wink

On topic I have nothing to add other than reports that's it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. This perhaps echoes Roger's comments about living within in the city.

Don't live at the opposite side of the Kingston Bridge from where you work. It's a nightmare in the morning - night time isn't so bad.

As said before, the areas listed are deemed to be areas to avoid. In some cases it's a street by street basis so check out your new place on a Friday and Saturday night when the natives are out.

The roads within the Glasgow City Council are a nightmare. They just don't seem to spend a penny on them. Out with this in North Lanarkshire/Renfrewshire/East Ren, the roads aren't quite so bad.

All together, pretty cheap to live and work in.

I'd seriously suggest bypassing the M8 if you have any alternative. I tried East Kilbride to Argyle Street via the M77 and M8 and it took 45 minutes even leaving at 6:30am with arse-clenching filtering.

Castlemilk -> Aitkenhead Road -> George V Bridge = 25 minutes, with almost no traffic before 7:30. Everyone's rammed on the motorway, doubtless thinking "Well, at least I'm not stuck on the surface streets." Folded arms

Oh, Chateau du lait eh Very Happy

Totally agree, although I filter past everyone in the mornings. I ride from Airdrie to Port Dundas daily which means 7 of the 18 miles are generally spent astride the white line.
