Congratulations, and very well done for no lessons! I'm guessing they'll pick up on that in your lessons and see you well on your way for mod 2 |

Because you have never bought or paid to run a big-bike Smiler.
| TheSmiler wrote: | they are cheaper. |
No, no they aren't, Smiler.
Look through new price listings, and the prices 'tend' to get higher with cc's... Second hand, Learner-Legals do seem to command something of a premium over what non learner-legals do, but, even so, second hand prices tend to be at least notionally related to original list price, depreciated by age and condition.
| TheSmiler wrote: | The only thing that can get dearer is the fuel costs. |
Again, not Really Smiler.
Thrashing a 125 compared to nursing a 750, gap in 'quoted' MPG compared to what you actually get can be closed quite dramatically. Easier to use more fuel, going faster and riding further, but not necesserily so. And still, only part of the all up costs'.
Parts and maintenence? CB125 Super-Dream; pair of Michelin M45's, are £70 and last, gawd knows how many miles, we've never worn a set out! CB750, pair of Avons, £200, with anticipated life span of around 3000 miles. CB125 Super-Dream Chain & Sprocket set: £70, CB750 Sprocket set £120. CB125 Brake Pads; £14. CB750 set of brake pads £19... only it needs three pairs, not one! And again, expected life, like tyres, a lot shorter.
The extra over the £16 a year tax on a tiddler, is peanuts in comparison. Might, in some cases save that on quirky quotes insurance, where occasionally bigger bikes can come in cheaper than bigger ones, but not always.
For the most part, 'all in' mile for mile, bigger bikes are rarely 'cheaper' than littler ones. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Not every-one can have everything they 'think' they want.. some-times, ever... and those that do achieve it, often find its not really what they expected. But Still.
Looking at the bargain basement of Sub-£1000 bikes, Smiler; you would probably get closer to what you really want, sticking with that GN125 for a while longer... it will be SO much faster without the added drag of L-Plates... appreciating its cheapness, and every time you're insurance co take their monthly payola, matching that into your savings account; likewise every time you fill up, stick a tenner in the tank; stick a tenner in the savings... and then DONT FUCKING CRASH for a while!
Savings will ramp quite quickly, and you'll be getting older, and gaining NCB to help bring future insurance premiums down, and you'll find that you'll be able to afford a 'decent' Trumpet or VFR, far sooner, than if you splat out on a 'cheap' XJ600, Bandit, 550 Zephyr, GT550, ER5 or CB500 or whatever.
Bikes in the £500 bracket usually don't have or deserve an MOT, and having dropped to that sort of price range, they tend to be sheds in serious maintenance overdraft, having been run into the ground; ever less spent on them, as they get ever less valuable, as when they fall to that sort of price range; new tyres and brake pads and an oil change is more than they are worth!
You don't buy one thinking "It just needs a little servicing" as in new brake pads and a bit of elbow grease; you buy one expecting to have to completely overhaul them, as in new brake pistons and seals, new float-pins, new discs AND new pads... likewise the suspension; wont be 'just needs fork-seals for test" will be needs new forks! New suspension, and so it goes on.
And lets be honest here, Smiler... you are NO mechanic, with even a 'fair' chance of keeping on old clunker running on a shoe-string, or getting a bit creative and making it a 'special'.
If you really want a Triumph or a VFR... well, make short term sacrifice for long term gain... apreciate tiddler for its strengths, which significantly is 'CHEAP', and let that help you get the bike you might really want, but DONT buy the first and the cheapest to come along, out of desperation to get a 'big-bike' and justify your DAS course.
Remember, rushing is quick way to hurt when it comes to bikes.
And POWER COSTS. One way or another, you want 'more' than a 125 has to offer, that 'more' will come at a price.

Wtf are you smoking? I paid more for my decent condition vfr 750 than my xj 600..
| Quote: | Bikes in the £500 bracket usually don't have or deserve an MOT |
Weird my vfr wasn't much off that... neither is the xj ive owned for over a year and motd and use daily I only paid £300 for it.

More bullshit... I paid £300 I can sell for £500 all day long... I bought my old divvy for £600 I sold it for £550 8 months later as a cat c.

I pay pennies for my CONSUMEABLES and ill tell you what you make a lot more money if you have a bike to get to work on than being sat at home with no bike.

No you don't if you buy a cheap bike in working order you don't normally have to do anything to them. Maybe new brake pads and possibly tyres... £100 tops that's less than £1000000 for a cb125 pooperdream off teff.

Just take your L plates off if they bother you that badly Might just be me/living in London, but I've noticed no difference in driver behaviour since losing mine. Personally I'd rather put the cost of mod 2 lessons/test fees towards a A2/A license, you have the experience of passing Mod 1, which's IMO the difficult bit, Mod 2 shouldn't be an issue if you ride regularly (& do shoulder checks etc.)
Regarding the big bike vs tiddler costs, running big bikes is massively more expensive. Not just in fuel, but servicing, parts, tax, insurance is the only area where they're pretty much the same. Yes they're cheaper to buy, but their isn't the same sort of re-sale market. ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

It'd be me who gets pulled and done for it though, and I'd get the copper who'd give me the full whack of points and fine. Rather pay 75 quid rather than get 6 points and 160 quid fine for it, and then get fisted on insurance
I plan on running it for a while, I've got a job interview next week which will dramatically up my income (seeing as now I'm on the dole) so hopefully I'll be able to save up and get a bigger bike and be able to afford to actually ride it. Time being though, I'm going to suck up being on a 125. If do I get this job, it'll save me a fortune in fuel (15 miles each way) and I've paid the insurance for this year anyway so changing bike is pointless ignoring the fact I'm only doing my A1 anyway. |
