Been commuting by train for the last 2 months and bloody hell! I'm about ready to start walking!!

I'm keeping my gsxr for ride outs and track days but am thinking to maybe get a little PCX125 for commuting.

Little twist and go, just cruise along and not feel silly using muffs in the winter lol.

Anyone owned one at all?

I am currently having to pay around £11 per day on the train so with mpg so high I'm thinking it may work out the same after consumables etc. which ain't too bad.

I am with MCE. Does anyone know if they allow an extra bike on their policies? Easier just to add it than get a new one I'm thinking?

No idea about the PCX or costs - with Bikesure [who at that time at least were considered fairly multi-bike friendly by all accounts] the past year or two, it worked out very expensive to 'add' my SB200 onto my ZX6's policy.

However, when it came to renewal of my main ZX6 policy over the phone I got quite a good multi-bike deal with the SB200 included after some hagglin' and blaggin' about 'other insurers' quotes - also included shared breakdown across both policies which was useful.

I scooter commuted for almost 2 years a few years back and it wasn't pleasant - the grip and brakes were shocking, and that was back then as my first 'bike' - let alone after riding the bikes i've owned since. Maybe the PCX is prepared for commuting but personally i'd avoid scooters generally.

Roger or someone else with a larger, more capable commuter-style scooter might be a good source of info Thumbs Up

How much are you looking at spending as I am likely going to be selling mine very soon (although possibly a little too much distance between us).

I've had mine for just over 3 years now (and put 22,000 miles on it) and have used it as my daily hack, so bored as hell of it now.

However, that said, the PCX is very good as far as scooters go. I've ridden a couple of other scooters/mopeds (SH300, some Peugeot thing and a Piaggio Zip 50) in the past and thought the handling on them in comparison to the PCX was awful. Probably mostly down to the fact the PCX has larger wheels (14") and the seat height is lower too which I personally prefer.

I'm not sure what tyre wear is like on other scooters but my PCX seems to get through rears bloody quickly (around every 3,500 - 4000 miles); however, front tyres seem to last ages. There's also the 2,500 mile service intervals that Honda reccomend, so if your going to stick to this then it will get expensive (depending on your mileage).

It also has that Start-Stop system that Honda go on about on there website. Don't really know why they bothered personally. I can understand it in cars where you have to wait in traffic for long periods of time, but on a bike, your filtering through traffic so it's pretty pointless in my mind. Mine is switched off all the time now.

Also, it has the ingenious idea that is Honda's combined braking system. Why this is required I do not know. If I want to use the front brake I will apply the front brake, not the rear.

However, overall I'm very pleased with it. In the 3 years I've had it, it has not let me down once and it seems to crash quite well too considering all the plastics surrounding it (come off 4 times now and only some minor scrapes).

EDIT: Forgot to mention the pretty crap seat design. It has a hump in the middle (for back support I guess) which is separate from the main seat unit. When it rains, water collects below this hump. When you start riding, vibrations from the engine will cause this water to seep out and you will have a wet arse. This of course isn't really a problem if your wearing waterproofs. But very annoying if your out on a nice day but it has recently rained so your not wearing waterproofs. Although, of course you have a GSXR so if it's nice the PCX will not be out Smile.

I was looking into this a few months ago though sadly the new job didn't come off.

From what I found out the PCX is a fantastic piece of kit for commuting and generally running about on 2 wheels. I don't think it's the best selling scooter in the country for nothing!

Cheap to buy, cheap to tax and insure and cheap to run.

I like the look of it and found the seating postion nice though I didn't get to the point of a test ride. All the reports a found suggested it was a nice ride and performed well. Even though it's a scoot it's a Honda so good fit and finish and I'd imagine well engineered and will last.

Good news too is that an updated model is coming spring 2014 which either means to get to buy the latest one with a few updates or get a new but last years model at knock down price.

Go for it I say.

Thumbs Up

Oh by the way they have altered the seat on the upcoming model. Some didn't like the hump on the current model though some didn't find it a problem from what I read, anyhow it's going on the newun.

Thumbs Up

I think I saw a picture of this updated model and I have a feeling it didn't have that seat hump on it. Looks like Honda may have listened to the vast majority of PCX owners as I think this was a common complaint.

EDIT: Got there before me.

Thanks for all the replies...

The gsxr won't be used for commuting at all. Just a weekend ride.

I will want to do my own servicing and maintenance but heard that can be tricky on these?

It's mainly the mpg I'm really impressed with. I am doing some weekend work at the minute so getting train 7 days a week is not fun in london!!

Montme- what price are you looking at? I don't mind getting someone to pick it up if it's been well maintained. Was looking at this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-PCX-125-Excellent-Condition-One-Owner-From-New-Only-2227-Miles-/201048874540?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item2ecf725e2c

2011 and only done 2k miles. But I'm not put off by mileage on a well kept machine...

You may be able to tempt me Wink

Then have you considered a Vision 110? They're only £1900 brand new and claim even better mpg.

Or there's the Wave 110, same price, 17" wheels, centrifugal clutch but manual gears. It was the monotony of getting the exact same response every time I twisted the throttle on my Burgman that finished it for me.

OK thanks andy.

MCE quoted £100 to add to my existing policy and considering I have 3 points, live and commute in london and am 26 its not that bad!

Roger - I am still a slight tart and don't really like the look of the visions or the other one you suggested but thanks.

Whats the burgman like on consumables and MPG?

Been using mine almost everyday for about 2 years now. It is my first two-wheeler so not much to compare to other than the er6 used for my das.

Anyway have to say this scooter is super reliable and comfy to ride day in day out. I'm 5'9" and the seat height and leg space seems decent enough.

I haven't calculated what my average mpg is but I get about 140miles from a tank which is so much cheaper than using the tube.

Anyway I love mine and will likely keep it when I get my big bike if funds allow. It's a great around-town ride.

Isn't wave pretty much the same as innova 125 ? Haven't ridden the wave but I ride Innova as delivery scooter and I honestly have to say it's a heap of cr*p! Covered over 3k miles on it so I get rough idea of how it works and.. well it doesn't... I just don't get the whole idea of semi-autos... they're just annoying and not easier to ride at all...either full auto or manual, semi-auto is pointless. The mpg is very impressive though.

My mate has the PCX and it's very nippy for a 125. It's a good scooter. Looks big and futuristic Laughing I'd definitely recommend the PCX.

Oh, sorry, I missed that.

Parts are pretty cheap. £30 for a front tyre, £6.50 a set for brake pads. 65mpg or so. I just got shot of it though because I wasn't enjoying working on it. Changing the rear pads was a wheel off, therefore exhaust off, therefore aaaaargh, snapped a stud job. Thumbs Down

That said, I was testing a couple of geared 125s this weekend to see if I could stomach going back to one for a commute. No. No, I can't. The gears serve only to frustrate. You're in the wrong gear most of the time, and forever chasing those tiny extra bits of torque and power, to very little effect.

If I were on a 125 again, I honestly think I'd go twist-and-go.

My thoughts exactly! I found I was in 5th gear on the van van during my CBT out on the road... 5th!!

Why does it even have 5 gears?!

The SH300 has larger wheels than the PCX at 16".

It also has excellent brakes - I trust the SH300's brakes over any big bike I've ridden in the city, especially in wet weather.

I find it easier to go faster in the city on a scooter than a big bike. More options for gaps from better manoeuvrability (certainly than a sport bike with wide turning circle), better stopping over a wider range of handling conditions (with a low centre of gravity, it's hard to drop a scooter, even if you're braking a little off vertical). YMMV.

Another plus is that accelerating to 60 between lights feels like you're going fast, so you're unlikely to go even faster.
