On Car brakes, I've used copper grease every time on sliding calipers, but I have heard that this is not really the correct product for the application?

Would RG2 grease be better or worse? And if neither of them are suitable, then I'll use Castrol underwater grease left over from my outboard motor re-build. Laughing

Lastly does anyone have any reccomendations for those small enduro bags that strap or bolt onto the rear fender/carrier? I'm after a small bag, but something that either has straps and Velcro or popper's or just bolts through the fender instead?

I just used what I had lying around, some halfords high melting point grease. Seems to be ok so far. Use copper slip on the pad retaining pins threaded bit and the caliper bolts.

I use the red one but its the same difference.

Never tried it myself but I've heard silicone paste is the best thing for car brakes.

Red rubber grease or silicone lubricant should be used on caliper sliding pins, but in the real world a bit of copper slip doesn't seem to hurt. They say that copper slip reacts with the rubber and causes it to swell but I have not personally had any trouble with using it.

I use a silicone grease that doesn't damage the rubber boots.

I use either LMP or moly-d, depending on which pot is on top of the other, or if I'm feeling extravagant then waterproof grease. It's just a lubricant between two sliding surfaces, the fact that it's near some braking components doesn't mean you need red rubber grease or that ceratec anti-squeal stuff. They have specific applications net required here.

RG2 is good so is any type of brake grease there rubber and alloy safe

Don't use copperslip it rots the rubber gaiters and adds to the ware on the alloy body

Yes copper slip was WAS recommended 15 years ago

I use moly grease because it's a high load, low movement, metal-on-metal application.

Graphite grease would also be appropriate.

Thanks everybody! Smile
I'll just stop giving it anymore thought and slap some RG2 on. I think underwater grease is a bit OTT for a bike that doesn't really go anywhere and certainly not underwater unless I run out of road next to the canal! Laughing

I've never had a problem with copperslip on car sliding calipers and didn't know it can affect rubber either? graphite paste sounds like an ideal product if you were being very anal though!

Only on the friction surface Twisted Evil

For legal reasons, I must point out that you should never put and grease/oil/lubricant on the friction surface of brakes

Rubber boots that are designed to hold grease are somewhat resistant to grease. I would be very sceptical of red rubber grease and doubt it would last very long.

What rubber where and what body where?

I dip my caliper pins in copaslip, the pins dont move one fixed into position.

The pins that locate the pads don't move (although the pads do move a tiny bit on them), but on sliding calipers the large pins the caliper slides on do have to put up with a fair bit of movement.

All the best

I've always used a high melting point Aluminium/Zinc grease, seems to hang on better than copper grease
