Evening,

Next on the agenda is changing the front brake line on the 125 Comet 2010! Is it best to change the master cylinder at the same time? Where/what would you guys recommend getting these from? Cheers.

Why are you changing it?

Get steel braided lines and be awesome.

I got a £15 m/c repair kit from ebay and it was fine.

Brake hose.
Why would you want/need to replace the master cylinder?
I have bikes 20-30 years old, that still have their original master cylinders. and calipers.
One or two may have had new seals and perhaps pistons fitted; but unless its been utterly butchered by botcherism, unintensional iversion interface with tarmac, been left 'dry' for umpety years and corroded solid; or has ACTUALLY and very uncommonly been used do much its TRULY worn out... not much reason to swap one.
Reservoir screws? Now thats another matter.

Anyway, to answer questions.
a) e-bay and I would get a Goodridge /Aeroquipe braided. Just personal preference.
b) as hint-imated above, no I wouldn't necesserily replace the master cylinder.
c) I WOULD however buy a couple of M5 countersunk screws, a large bottle of DOT 4 and some windscreen washer pipe.
I know there's no question for answer c) but what the heck!

If master cylinder reservoir screws arent siezed and chewed.. chances are they will be before your done. Following Inverse rule of Sod... investment in two new screws, in anticipation of having to drill off the heads of the old ones, lift cap over siezed shanks, and then remove with mole grips.... precaution of new screws to refit cap after, will see Sods-Law see the screws come straight out without incident, leaving you with two unnecessary new screws; which is better than two chewed screws, believe me.

Dot 4 to fill new pipe and flush through system.

Windscreen washer pipe to put on bleed nipple on the caliper and into and old milk-bottle or similar, so that when you flush through, you dont spray the bottom of the petrol tank or anything elsce with paint stripper... sorry, DOT4.

HTH

Sort of like what CaNsA is saying, do it if it needs it.

Cosmetic or aesthetic , do it if that is what you want, if it works as it is why change it ?

Edit note: my post logged in after Tef posted, so, what Tef said applies also.

Cheers for the replies especially Teflon-Mike. I wasn't sure if the mc needed changing after so many years just like the hoses would due to deterioration etc? I now know - thanks. I want to change hose as it's a little on the short side and it's also an advisory on last mot. Frightens me when I turn steering full lock to the right. It's not affecting steering but only just!!! So all I need is the hose as I have fluid etc. Thanks again all.

CaNsa, I did not point out anything related to Tef's post, see my EDIT.

Confusion re nanosecond submissions of hitting the 'post'' key seems to have been the cause for misinterpretation, done, sorted, no harm done.

The last time someone encouraged him, he wrote a post so lengthy that BCF collapsed under the strain and we went without for 3 weeks.

Nope, wasn't my lengthy post, it was the 352 pointless posts that followed, all commenting how long my post was, that jammed it up.

That's more like it, keep them to around that length.
