ok so my housemate has recently decided that he wants to join me on 2 wheels and ive been looking for a few weeks at reliable commutable 125s sub 1k
it looks like the choice is newish jap makes are 1,5-3k
old japs 1,1-1,8k
Chinese 800-1,5k

in fact to meet his cash and also find something he finds aesthetically pleasing the only real option is a 2t, however im not sure itll be up to the use it will get and his riding skills

any one have any advice for me?

A two stroke will be fine as long as he goes for an NSR125 and not an Aprilia or Cagiva IMO.

Bikes are expensive at the moment, which is why there are so many chinese ones out there. Why spend £500 on a secondhand chinese bike when you can have a brand new one for £800?

Plenty of jap 125s between 800 and 1000.

150 for CBT tops.

Then gear... looking another 100-200 really.

Is the bike for leisure or commuting?

If it's for leisure and he's up for rebuilding a top end once in a while, then a 2 stroke isn't a bad option.
As for riding ability and 2 strokes, he'll be fine, they're not ridiculously fast, people jump on 600cc bikes such as Hornets and Fazers without any real previous experience and are still breathing.

If it's for commuting, maybe a 4stroke may be more suitable and you can find CG's and YBR's for under a grand.

As for aesthetically pleasing, it all depends on what he likes?

125 in a sporty frock?
Cruisers?
Large presence? (such as Hyosung GT)
Tourer-ish looking bike like a Derbi Terra or Varadeo?

Does this £1k budget include gear, CBT and insurance or just the bike?

well his cbt is done and ive got an unused helmet which fits him pretty well my main issue is transport i can get cheaper bikes but theyre a little far out and delivery costs an arm and a leg
also with regards to usage the plan will be for him to use it for his 13 mile each way commute and then ill probably take him a little further on nice weekends see if he can hone his skill
with regards to maintenance its not soo much a problem i had 2 stroke autos when i was younger and the engines are simple to me so shouldn't be too hard
ill have a look at some nsr's

looks wise he likes the he likes the sumo style of bike so the dt's xr's xt's however he accepts a ybr, cg etc etc may not look cool but itll do him until hes 24 and can do direct access

Well if he finds a bike he likes that's far away, buy the bike, insure it there and then (Get a quote reference off a comparison site, call up insurer and take out insurance on the bike once he's purchased it) and ride the bike back? Maybe renting a van could be cheaper than delivery, if you or your mate have a car license and he's willing to pay for the rental of a van.

As for which bike, NSR's are great fun but obviously not the crosser or SM style bike he's into. A DT may be your best bet. My mate bought a mint DT125 on a 51 reg with a DEP exhaust system last year around this time for £1,100 in London, picked it up in his dads van and brought it home (to B'ham).

i did read on here cbfs are a bad bet due to rusting is there anything specific i should be looking at on these other than the norm?

Common problems with the CBF are the fuel pumps and rust, they are very prone to rust and rust a lot if they're not cared for. I did 10k miles on mine in 11months and never had any problems with the fuel pump, I also never used ACF50 and it didn't rust that much tbh, there were small bits of rust but no were near as bad as others, I guess I got lucky + it was garaged.

As for the £1100 price tag for the 09 CBF, doesn't seem too bad tbh. I'd try and get it for a grand or less dependant on the condition of the consumables and the amount of rust it's accumulated over the years.

Any links for the said bikes?

I paid 900 quid for my 57 plate YBR with 9k miles on it. Bit tatty and I haggled down from 1100 as he was flogging the gear with it but I didn't want it.

You can get bikes under 1k as long as you go private (not much point going to a dealer on a 2nd hand 125, they'll just rape you on price) and are willing to haggle. Thumbs Up

one would hope you are joking, but seeing as you have owned a yzfr125
then who knows, apart from the cbr125 the yzfr is definitely the most try hard and pointless of the 125 range,

That's quite a trusting assumption. It was probably a Skyjet with Yamaha stickers.

yes granted it looks good but them skinny tyres and a derbi gpr 4t kicks its butt in everyway and with a cheaper price tag but thats my opinion after having them both
