Ive got to try and sort an oil leak and find time to take the fairings off to do so,

I'm expecting to find some oil on the inside, what's best to use? I'll be re-painting the fairings at some point in the summer.

Was thinking chain de-greaser or brake cleaner or warm soapy water?

Not sure about brake cleaner. Degreaser should be fine. Fairy Liquid would be fine as well.

Hot, soapy water works on most things without removing the pain.

WD40 or paraffin applied with a paintbrush is unlikely to damage anything much if there is a serious clagging providing it is then washed off with the afore-mentioned hot, soapy water.

Your prep for paint will need to be better than that but if you're waiting 'till summer, no point in prepping now.
