A good friend of mine at work is looking for a scoot, he has an artificial leg (knee down) and can't ride manuals as he can't shift gears,

He's adamant on getting a cheap scoot and wanted some advice on 2 he's narrowed down.

A 2002 Honda Silverwing with 72k costing £1250 miles on it or a 1999 Burgman 400 with 49k costing miles on the clock £1695 .

what does the BCF massive think? or any other suggestions, He has a full licence as he lost his leg after he took his test.

Id say test ride and go for whatever suits his prosthetic best comfort and safety wise.

72k is a huuuge mileage for any bike. Personally I'd not go with either as they both sound like they might be F*cked.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

thats what I'm thinking but he has a low budget (£1600) and large scooters at that price are hard to come by (so he says)

Aprilia mana?
https://www.motorcycle.com/images/content/Review/1mana0417.jpg
Full auto (notice lack of clutch lever) but has 'proper' bike looks. Comes in a newer version (called the Mana GT) that has a bit of fairing around it.

Edit - missed the budget bit. They seem to be starting around £2.5k.

If I lost a leg I would do anything I could to avoid a scooter, there are some pretty decent auto and button shift bikes around now, and plenty of bikes have been converted to button shift in the past, there must be some sort of option for him other than a maxi scooter.

I totally get scooter's I think?

But these big 500,600cc+ Maxi scoots weighing in at 180-200kg's I just don't grasp the concept of why TBH?

I would say for a scoot, you want small, compact nimble and slim, with something lightish under 125kg, and anything up to 20bhp or so? After that they lose me I'm afraid!

Wut? From a dealer, presumably. He'll get much newer or lower mileage for that money privately. Pre-2007 wants the short, nearly horizontal crankcase breather disconnected from the airbox or it will suck oil.

Objectively, they're fine. A decent commuter or even an unhurried tourer, great storage and weather protection, 65mpg+, an unstressed 70mph+, very comfy and practical.

I sold mine mainly because it was dull, and partly because it wasn't easy to work on - changing the rear pads means wheel off which means exhaust off which means oh-snap.

Which raises an issue. Unless he's able to do the work himself, then he'll want to find a garage willing to do it. I've heard tell that some independent garages don't want to touch older scooters because the time to do jobs tends to rack up quicker than owners want to pay for it.

Getting rinsed for lots of hours at main dealer prices on an older scooter doesn't make much sense.

Sorry for late reply guys, been busy.

in the end he went for a Piaggio XEvo 400. (awaits the flames lol)

reason being he's on crutches with his leg and exvo has very long boot and he can fit them in it.

If I was disabled there would be one thing I wanted above anything - THIS (admittedly a lot more than a couple of grand.

I'm presuming you can get some form of auto box for them.

True,

but he'll lose the benefit of parking in motorcycles bays and congestion charges (i think)

plus he likes the Piaggio as his crutches fit nicely in it

Why? It's a perfectly reasonable solution, and he's still on 2 wheels.

Mind, I might have been tempted by something like an MP3.

Congestion charge exempt even if it's the "cat B" version, and pragmatically I can't see any real issues with sticking it in a solo motorcycle bay.

My bad then lol.

Mp3 was way out his price range. The Piaggio was I guess the next best thing

Rode a Piaggio X9 for a while a very capable bike easy to live with, yes you do have to adapt your riding style especially in the wet comfortable for doing big trips. Should be some good 500 around for his budget.

My brother in law has a false leg from the Knee down and he's got a Gsx 750 Inazuma and he just had 1 of those pneumatic gear changer sets ups put on his bike...I think he got it for free as he joined a disabled riders group if I remember rightly.
