Helmet Review: My new Shoei Z-One

I just thought that I would post my thoughts on my new lid, the Shoei Z-one.

As many of you already know, I have been after a new lid for some time, but on sunday I decided that I was never going to find a 'darth vader' lid that I could try on. I figured that my old lid was now well past its best. I popped into J and S in newbury to look at lids. I settled on a nice Shoei!

Having given it a thorough road test I have discovered that it has much better visibility than my Roof Diversion, and it allows me to turn my head for 'lifesavers' much more easily. It is a very quiet helmet and the visor mechanism is a great improvement over the notchless roof design.

The only downsides that I can see at the moment are that the double 'D' ring fastner is much more fiddly to operate with gloves on, and I have noticed some visor misting today despite it being twenty degrees centigrade and fine weather. In its defence, the de-mist and air vents work very quickly to clear the problem.

All in all I'm a happy man!

Anyone else got any thoughts on their lids?

How bizarre

last month I had enough of my Roof Diversion and bought

guess what ?


a Shoei Z1


now having had many Shoeis before, I wasn't surprised by the quality and the visors are superb (I have a selection of irridiums that fit)

but Marjay, did you not get the new Shoei pinlock clear with it, mine came with one but the shop did have to remove the normal one and replace it with the pinlock

basically it's a fog city type insert made by Shoei to fit, works like double glazing - zero fogging ever, under any conditions


I was, however, surprised at how noisy it is compared to the Roof. Strange how different people have different impressions

it is a better fit as well but as you say that D ring is a bugger, not the fastening itself but the little clip that attaches the loose end of the strap can be a sod to find even with gloves off

I own a Shoei Raid, it's a really good fit and the visibility is great, but I had to get a foggy mask for it as It used to mist up quite a lot.

Not owning another lid I can't comment on the noise factor, although i'm looking into getting the new shoei diabolique.

The bike creates the danger which the helmet is there to protect against...
