So... I've got myself a new job and one of the perks is a travel subsidy which can be used for vehicle payments.

I'm in the early stages of looking, but I'd quite like some kind of off road tourey type thing. Not a GS as I don't have the budget for new textiles every time I go out, nor do I have a friend to play charlie...

It has to be:
- relatively new as I need to find it in a dealer (to qualify for the subsidy).
- comfortable 2 up
- easy to maintain / repair

I like the idea of the KTM adventure 990 but hate the look of the thing and have 0 idea about the part availability / ease of home repair.

So... influence me early and I may even go with one of these ideas rather than just asking for advice then ignoring it and buying a Renault 5 instead.

As an idea if buying new there should be some deals for the Suzuki V-Strom.

Yeah, not a bad call - bit ugly and plasticky but I'll try see one in the flesh. Also led me on to the 660 tenere and triumph tiger 800.

The GS comes with other numbers than "1200" in front. "700" and "800" might fit your bill.

I can't fault mine (so far) but would definitely consider the V-Strom, Versys and Tiger as well. Don't overlook the new NC750X either, Honda have added a bit of power and torque while claiming even higher mpg.

Honda Transalp? Know of somebody with one of these who considers it an easy bike to work on when it ever does which is rarely, has 80,000 miles and still going (its a 1990 600 variant), newer ones increased in CC up to 700 but if after even bigger CC consider the Varadero 1000.

Can't comment on the ride of them but just suggestions Thumbs Up

Another one for the list - the Versys looks like it covers many of the bases. I am more interested in the smaller end of the engine range so 500-750.

Why not the KTM 990 SMT? If you don't like the Dakar looks of the Adventure, the SMT might be a bit more palatable.

Definitely looks better, but I don't really want the large engine. The problem then is that smaller KTMs need a full service every 3000miles! It's double that for a tenere...

they seem to be very popular, to the point where the prices have gone up ... parts & servicing aswell .. which would mean other less fashionable road bikes are cheaper.

On this forum? Don't talk such nonsense!

Also, have you read the smallprint? Where I work you can get vehicle payments but the health and safety bods throw their toys out of the cot if you turn up on a bike. I know one bloke got a massive bollocking for it once and nobody ever did it again.

^^^ Agreed. I am 100% not allowed to use a bike for anything to do with work. Bloody H&S. Evil or Very Mad

As far as bike go. Any of the smaller adventure bikes should be OK for what you want, it's just a matter of picking one that floats your boat.

I really like the Tiger 800XC but I like that engine more than any twin, it's lush.

I already have a road bike. This one is essentially free and I'll maintain it myself so I'm not bothered by cost apart from the initial purchase being around €5-8k

Funny thing is that despite living in a more socialist country than the UK there's a greater emphasis on personal freedom. So, nobody even considers interfering in that kind of way.

I'm pretty sure that they'll all be reasonable - just like you can't get a bad car nowadays, you do have to work hard to find a bad bike. Thing is, I'm completely clueless about this end of the market... I didn't even know the tenere (which is high on the list at the mo) was even a possibility. If I was going sports or naked it'd be an easy choice...

Do they also spit their dummies if you pedal to work, or worse, walk? Thinking

Ninja 250? Apparently chicks get proper moist over them, and that's what we should be looking for in a bike.

Strangely that would be in my top 5 if I were getting a road bike, along with a 636 and maybe a Ducati 848.

I dunno, I love Ducati's but the non-sports models seem like sacrilege.

Capanord 1200? That's a V-Twin too.

Nah, looking for a smaller engine but investigating it led me on to another option - Honda CB500X

What sort of riding are you doing?

I had a Tenere 660, lovely looking bike. Was mostly used for commuting through London. I found the seat height just a little too high for me. I also found the engine a bit too lumpy, but that's probably just be riding a bit ham fisted.

I now have an older Versys 650. The seat is a little lower, more comfy and the parallel engine is much easier to get on with.

I'm sorely tempted by the current offer from Triumph with the Tiger 800. £99 a month...

That's a pretty good looking bike. It's very similar to the NC750X. Is there much difference between the 2 apart from the engine?

Commuting mainly, 100km a day over motorways. But, I'm fairly central in Europe and the missus loves travelling so I expect quite a few weekends touring during summer. I have a car for bad weather and a bike capable of a blast so I'm pretty set on the tourer this time.

Engine wise, I've had nothing but v-twins so I'm good with lumpy. I'm also 6'1" with fairly long legs so if anything I'd appreciate the taller bikes.

From what I can tell the CB500 is a platform, 3 bikes are spawned from it - the F, X and the base. The F has fairings, the X is cross country (longer front forks and a bit of fairing) and the base is just bog standard naked bike.

The X seems to get spectacular reviews everywhere, but it isn't a 'true' adventure bike so it's not perfect for serious offroading, but a bit of rough is fine. The NC750X seems to be more suited to 'adventure' and also comes with an optional dual-clutch transmission. The 750 is clearly the better bike, but the 500 is substantially cheaper to buy and run.

My next move is to head down to the dealers... CB500X, versys 650 and tenere 660 test rides. Tenere looks the prettiest, CB500X gets the best reviews.

Nice little features the Tenere had were:

A bar above the clocks you could fit a RAM mount onto for Sat-Nav/Phone etc
The fork gaiters are a nice touch
There a rubber 'flap' that helps protect the rear shock from most of the crap.

I was however a little wary of the bash panels. they aren't particularly well secured. And hiding the coolant tank behind one seems a little stupid. Oh, and upgrade the bash place if you want to go anywhere rocky. The plastic wont offer much protection.
