PostPosted: 16:50 - 16 Apr 2014    Post subject: Filling Fuel - Pump keeps cutting out Reply with quote

I have been riding around on my bike for a couple months now and I am having trouble putting fuel in it. I thought I will eventually get the hang of it.

The problem is that I have to fill the tank really really slowly other wise the pump cuts out.

Takes me an absolute age to fill fuel - Please HELP, What am I doing wrong?!

Thanks in advance.

Don't dump it all the way in the tank, I get mine just resting inside the tank and fill to the top/until fuel splashes over my already stained jeans.

Depends on the shape of your tank. I guess you are just pointing the nozzle straight down. Try pointing it towards your bars.

Don't put the whole fuel nozzle in the tank, put it so it's o lying just in the tank then it won't keep cutting out

Thanks for the fast* reply.

I kept trying to have it deep as possible to try and make it not cut out.

I will try what you guys have suggested.

It's cutting out because you have it to far in. They cut out when the fuel reaches the end of the nozzle so you don't overflow the tank

[innuendo]I always refuel with it only just into the opening of the tank, can usually pump it fast at the start but you need to slow down as it fills up to avoid splashback on the nozzle[/innuendo]

There's a little hole in the end of the nozzle where the fuel comes out that sucks in a small amount of air. It's designed to close the trigger switch if the air supply is stopped even slightly by liquid fuel getting in the hole. It works great on cars because most cars have a long filler neck feeding the tank which the nozzle only reaches partly down into, so you can fill the tank right up and the cut-out will only work when fuel fills the filler neck. Because a bike tank has no filler neck you're putting the nozzle directly into the tank so whenever you touch the fuel level (or get a small splash of fuel in the nozzle) it cuts out.

Fill your tank as you normally do, then when it cuts out draw the nozzle back until the end is just inside the filler spout. Support the hose with your other hand if you like, it will help prevent it splahing back by accident if you move a bit. You'll be able to fill the tank right up.

BTW you'll get more in the tank if you put it on the centre stand.

Sit the bike upright when refueling and have the pump nozzle end JUST and no more at the tip of the fuel tank and slow the rate down towards the end to prevent sqooshing fuel all over bike.

This is highly fucking annoying at many US filling stations, where the nozzle can only be activated if a collar around the spout is compressed. When used on a motorcycle tank, you need to manually compress the collar with your other hand. And it's not clean.

16 April 2014, the day the saying "there's no such thing as a stupid question" got proved wrong Wink

I have a mare at work filling iveco dailys, as the idiots designed the filling hose to bend too much, fuel always gets backed up, struggling to fill a bike is criminal however

Yh, I know it is stupid of me.

I was thinking that there is a sensor on the shaft that gets activated when it is fully inserted (designed for cars) hence I was trying to put the shaft further inwards in order to activate this imaginary sensor Wink I had created in my head. (hope that explains the stupidity and enjoy the innuendos ).

Barrkel - It was annoying when the cashier was laughing through the window at my futile attempt.

Well anyways, thank you everyone for the replies and hopefully it will not take me ten minutes of on-off pumping to fill the damn thing with £10s of fuel.

You know how people say stuff like one day you'll look back at that and laugh? Well this is more a case of one day you'll look back at that and weep.

Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question. If you've never been shown before how were you to know. Fair play for asking Thumbs Up Bikes are tricky things when you first start out. Smile
A friend of mine (non biker) assumed that all motorcycles were automatic because he couldn't figure out how a gear lever would work...

This is actually not that shocking to me anyway to be honest, luckily I never went through this scenario. The only reason being is Teflon Mike showed me how to do it. Embarassed

Ok it's a simple method but if you have never filled up a fuel tank before, or don't have parents who run a car (never watched them fill it up). Then it's not that hard to understand why some people are confused why it cuts out.

I have been driving for five years. I maybe starting to get a tiny bit embarrassed now Embarassed
