Haha not as dodgy as it sounds. Will be used for motorsport and wildlife also.

I have the canon - tbh it's ok but nothing special, just a budget lens.

Wish it was faster, and only having 250 rather than 300 means my motorsport shots are often on full zoom and thus a bit flat

Still get some good ones though

300mm would be better for air shows. I had a Canon 70-300 IS USM lens which gave pretty good results for around £200 s/h

Neither, both are pretty rubbish and way overpriced.

You can buy a 300mm tele for a lot less than 150 quid and have superior quality, look at some of the film SLR lens that fit for a fraction of the price on ebay, the modern plastic stuff is crap, look for older quality lens from SLR auto focus cameras as they will fit a modern DSLR no probs and have superior quality

Don't buy any Canon FD mount lenses as they won't fit your camera. You need either Canon EF or EF-S mounts for your camera (I'm pretty sure it was OP that just bought a new Canon?). The EF mount was introduced in 1987 though so there is a lot of old stuff out there that will fit but just double make sure it's not a Canon FD mount. There are adapters out there to convert FD mount lenses to an EF mount but they're not very good by most reviews I have seen.

Yeah bought a 1100d four weeks ago. I'm just after more length at the moment and equal in quality to the kit lens.

You can expand your range on the cheap by watching for good old lenses that fit with an inexpensive adapter ring.
Generally you won't have auto focus though.
I had a couple of old Olympus lenses and fitted to a 5D they are really good.
https://www.flickr.com/groups/eos-manual-lenses/

I wouldn't rule out a 'one lens' solution such as an 18-200 from Sigma or Tamron.
If nothing else you soon get very well acquainted with what it can do.
On a crop body 200mm gives you quite a decent zoom.
The downside (in reviews - you may hardly notice) is distortion and softness round the edges.
This can be dealt with in processing pretty well though.

For your budget thats essentially 2 lenses of any worth.

The Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens.
https://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-apo-macro-super-dg-lens-canon-fit/p1008569

and

The Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens
https://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-tamron-70-300mm-f4-5-6-di-ld-macro-lens-canon-fit/p1013817

or if you stretch your budget, the Canon equivalent is...
https://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-canon-ef-75-300mm-f4-5-6-iii-lens/p12850

But you're essentially paying for faster, quieter AutoFocus there.
I've owned all 3 lenses, and personally I'd go for the Sigma.
