I was in the tyre shop yesterday and chatting to the guy balancing my wheel when we heard his mate call upon the lord in shock and horror
and walked over to see what the fuss was about.
He'd just wheeled in a YBR 250 and and had removed the seat to do some work and there on the battery was a combination spanner.

The ring end was touching the earth terminal and the open end about
1-2mm away from the pos terminal.
So close he was very careful in moving it away.
Owww!
It did have a red terminal boot, but it wasnt snugged down that well so any movement could have easily shorted the terminals together.

There was also a box spanner and adjustable spanner haphazardly
stowed in the area too.
Spanner on the battery aside it must have rattled like hell when riding
and if not a tool roll, an old rag/tee shirt would have helped.

This happened on a mates Fireblade, the tool bag had actually worn through and the ring spanner was sat on top of the swing arm at "high speed" so when he hit the brakes for a junction this happened, he kept it upright though and we ended up dropping the back wheel out in the middle of nowhere to get it out.

A technician from a bike shop in Edinburgh was telling me how they once had a relatively new Triumph in and out several times because it was down on power with very glitchy fuelling and running rich.

It ran a lot better when they explained to the owner that the airbox was not intended for use as a tool roll storage area.

I've never done that sort of thing with the bike but I did slam the bonnet of my old XR3i down without removing a rubber mallet from atop the rocker cover. Ouch.

The worst part (apart from ruining the bonnet) was that I realised as I was still holding the bonnet but my brain-hand interface wasn't fast enough to stop me slamming it down.
