AM category on license

Not a concern for me, but: I have a friend who currently has a full car driving license. The rules from the DSA are fairly clear: Once he does a CBT, then he can ride AM vehicles (i.e. mopeds) without L plates because the CBT validates the entitlement he got as part of the car license (and it doesn't run out after 2 years).

However, how does he get AM entitlement added to his license so he could ride a moped in a European country? Here in the UK, full car + CBT certificate would be fine, but I wouldn't expect a random Italian rozzer to understand or know about that - and the whole point of the new license structure was that the categories were the same Europe-wide, right?

Anybody know, or would it be a case of contact the DSA/DVLA and hope they're feeling helpful?

(Or is the answer: He doesn't have an AM license, so even though he can ride mopeds in the UK, he can't anywhere else?)

I'm fairly sure that the AM entitlement will appear on his licence as a full entitlement.

The CBT just validates that entitlement. So, if he really wanted he could go abroad without showing them a CBT certificate, because it'll already be in the full section of his licence. That'd be naughty though.

Note that the AM bit only appears on newer licences, it's category p on the slightly older style ones (although p does appear on the newer ones too if you had it on an old one)

Aha - right now he has an old (pre-2013) license, so you're saying that if he gets a new one issued - for any reason, whether that's moving house, or just because he 'misplaces' it Rolling Eyes

- the new one will come back with AM on it automatically, just like his current one (presumably) has category P on it?

Yes, the new one will come back with AM on automatically.

However, he doesn't need to do that, category p says that he can ride mopeds so he should be fine abroad.
