As much as I might get on peoples nerves on here, I have a genuine question

Can someone tell me or link me to a previous thread about where to go from a CBT at 17, basically I don't want to have to resit(as much as I think it would be fun to do CBT again) I don't want to waste any money on it,

Provisional ✔
Book CBT ✔
Done CBT ✔
...?

Depending on how 17 you are I would hang on and do the A2 license at 19. That way you get a bigger bike license if not the full A license.

If you had only just turned 17 when you done the CBT You might well have to resit it. If you have a few weeks of being 19 before the CBT runs out I would get your theory test done and save up and do DAS on an A2 bike.

Should you just take the A1 you will be stuck on a 125 until you take another test 2 years later. The cost can work out more expensive. At least with the A2 there are many bikes all capable of exceeding the speed limit with ease out there for you.

I'm 18 in late July and I only did my CBT last September! so plenty of time, planning on going home later on and revising road theory tests, I got the iPad app about 2 years ago and kept at it till I kept getting 50/50, hopefully still know it all!

So should I ring my local trainer, ask about A2's? I'd rather have my CBT not expire and trod along on a 125 for 2 years longer I don't really mind

Put it this way, CBT costs around 100 quid (although one local bike school charges 120). For me to do my A2 licence it cost me 390 quid could cost more if you need more lessons or who you go with. Some schools are cheaper than others.

I personally don't see the point in doing the A1 license for a 125. You get to take pillions and go on motorways but nothing else to really twist my arm. A standard 125 will just about pull the rider let alone someone on the back anyway plus when I passed my A2 and wasn't yet insured to ride the Bandit, I took people on the back of my CBF 125. It handles ok with just me on it but 2 up and it's all over the place not to mention the pillion is real close as the seat isn't all that big. It's much easier taking pillions on a bigger bike IMO.

As people have said, if you turn 19 and you still like have a few months left on your CBT then wait until you're 19 otherwise I'd personally redo the CBT when you're 19 works out a lot cheaper in the long run spending 100 odd quid for another CBT then roughly 400 quid on A2 then it is paying 400 quid for A1 then another 400 quid for A2 just so you can ride a bigger bike.

Very good post man, I like the sound of this as a few others have said.. I'll see if I stick with the idea! One of the only reasons I want to do my A2 is because of he two benefits, I want to be able to take my girlfriend out for a bit, and motorways will be helpful

If you have a 125 on L's, then you can take your theory, self book Mods and take them on that 125, for £33 for Theory, £15, Mod 1, £75 for Mod 2. At that price, A1 is as cheap as, and can be viewed as a 'once and forever' CBT.

If you have nothing better to do for a couple of years than piss about on L-Plates... OK, wont get you a bigger bike, and carrying a pillion or using motorways might not be much of an incentive, BUT.... better than doing nowt, and it Does have a few advantages, and it IS a jump start to bigger, better things if you want them.

Starts the clock on your 2 year New Driver probation, for a start; so that is counting down in your favour, while your on a bike less likely to help you loose your licence, rather than watching the validity of your CBT ebb away.

Also nails down your Theory... once done and a full licence obtained; never has to be repeated;

Means you have a few jump-starts towards A2 or full A if you come to do them later; CBT never has to be repeated; nor does Theory, so while you are trying to get big bike licence; neither is subject to time limited certs.

Also, you will have 'done' the tests once over; alll be it on a little bike... BUT you know the ropes; its a bit of t-crossing and i dotting, to do over on a bigger bike.

So, ought to mean getting higher licence is a lot easier, and ought be less expensive, needing less training and or school hours to get the tests done.

OK, may not get it first time on a 125, but, at test fees only, failing on a tiddler is a lot cheaper than failing on a DAS bike costing you probably £120 a shot over test fees.

Pillions and Motorways? Well, I tend to avoid motorways full stop on a bike... they are boring. But, can ride them on a 125... provided you treat 125 for what it is, a 'slow' vehicle, and keep to 55 in the truck-stack... Two-Up, on a tiddler? Not the most comfortable proposition, but again, do-able, provided you ride within your bikes capabilities.

So 2-up and motorways are 'do-able' even at the same time... though I wouldn't be planning any major 2-up touring!

Might 'look' like all you get for doing A1 tests, and be rather 'marginal' benefits... and they probably are... but the REAL benefits are the ones under-lined above that are less obviouse, and this last one...

TEARING UP THE FUCKING L-PLATES

The shear joy of that, is worth everything. Suddenly you are a qualified rider, who's earned their road room, and there's no more excuses for the fucking Loonie badge on the bike! Means little to any-one else, but satisfaction of knowing YOU have made the grade? That's what you get.

It makes so much sense to have a crack at A1; and what you got to loose? If 17, you cant do anything else for a couple of years, might as well try using some of thet time to get a little ahead... cant stick you behind, can it?

Can second that Thumbs Up I optimistically took a screw driver with me just so that IF I passed I could remove the L plates straight away.

Then I overtook a car on the way home and thought "Ha you got overtaken by a leaner...Oh wait..nope..can't think that anymore Crying or Very sad"
