I remember hearing something a long time ago that you could move a reg from a car to a bike but not the other way around.

Just wondering if thats bollocks or if there is some truth to it all as Im going to be selling my car, just about to get a new bike and thought it says it going on retention.

Yes.
They changed the rules a while back to allow switching between vehicle types.
IIRC only real requirement is you can't make a vehicle appear newer than it is via reg plate.

My current bike plate has been on 2 bikes, and at least 2 cars. With a spell on retention to.

Think it was the other way round. Could move a plate from a bike to a car but but from a car to a bike.

Pretty pointless rule (probably brought in when they wanted to discourage people swapping plates around, before they realised the money they could make from it) and scrapped ages ago I think.

Paddys top tips.

Buy Honda car and have your CBR125 reg handy, get plate for CBR on ebay to fit both car and bike.

Insure the Honda CBR125 and drive the Honda Civic Type R, cheaper running costs. Whistle

Except when you get pulled and they check the reg. Might be a bit awkward when it comes back as a motorbike when they've got a Civic in front of them.

If you want to keep the reg/auction at a much later date then transfer it to the bike as long as you aren't likely to be selling that anytime soon [as long as it won't make the bike appear newer than it is].

Unless you plan to imminently sell the reg, using retention certs is probably a lot more hassle and cost than its worth.

The reg is a good investment from the £250 it cost me over a decade so not looking to flog it, but might be without my own car for a bit until I find a suitable replacement (so using the works wagon for a month or two).

If you decide to stick it on a vehicle to avoid retention fees remember the vehicle will need to be MOT'd when you want to transfer it off - so don't put it on an old shitter that will never run again!
(It also may get inspected by the DVLA at the same time, to make sure it's as described - and exists!)

Are you seriously considering one? Only reason I'd advise against is because they are budget bikes. They aren't torquey as you'd expect and aside from the fact people pimp them for mini twin racing, they are fairly mundane and serve a basic purpose.

I'd go for the slightly less boring but exceedingly generic Honda Hornet Wink
