A year is about to be up for owning my SF1098. It has been one of my best bikes but I've decided its not suited to anything but open roads. Its too much of a pain in the ass around London, I blame the dry clutch!

I want a new bike, has to be on finance as I still owe on this one. The top contender is a Tuono V4, it doesn't look great but everything else seems perfect. However as I've read reliability is random and dealers are few with parts supply rubbish.

I'm half tempted to try a jap bike again but I'm worried I'll just find it boring and want to change again. I could use it and abuse it though Laughing

Anyway value wise it has to be similar to my current which is about 7k
(BTW I'm talking used bikes not new)

Bikes are boring, I find anything with more than 60hp or so makes everything stupidly easy and quite boring after a while. Have you considered a triple, 675s that is.

Yamaha MT09 would give you some smiles, doesn't feel quite as generic.

Ahh the Tuono..

Well.. Laughing

Fantastic bike, Slightly wide bars, very sit-up. but its not a de tuned engine. Take an RSVR and stick flat bars on it. I loved mine even after it tried taking my finger off me...

Too upright and more than likely too tall.

Tuono V4 would be perfect but I'm just worried about reliability. People were having valves done at like 4k miles! My SF only had 2 slightly out at 7k miles and the whole thing only cost about £200 to have done

The more I read about the MT09 the more interested I get. And at that price I could even add the full Ti Akra!

I'd assume he was referring to a Super Duke 1290, but you'd need to double your budget to get one of those.

There's always the Super Duke 990 (it couldn't be brand new though ofc) could be a good contender. My instructor had a super duke 990 that he used for work, so they can't be that bad for day-to-day riding.

Yep - 990. Though after posting I did realise how similar it is to what youve already got.

If all is well I'm just going to go for the Tuono V4

It is a fact though. Perhaps I've spent too long commuting but anything <30hp is fucking dull, anything above about 80hp just goes fast easily.

I've purposely sold my bike because they are boring me. I've just bought a car... I now have a track bike for road riding in sunny weather only.

Fair enough to the OP, but is having a nice shiney 1000cc V4 performance naked/streetfighter style bike worth it in central London?

Does 150bhp+ ever become useful in such situations, and is having such power for such a constricted purpose anything more than bragging rights?

Agree with Stevo.

It sounds like you could do with 2 bikes. You might not have the room etc, but you definitely sound like you need a bike between 30 and 50hp for the run through London, a KTM or DRZ for example. Then something with a little poke for the weekends.

I agree with Paddy on this, Since I bought my Thou it's stupid quick and makes my 600 feel like a 125 its nice having the extra power but when you look down and you see figures likely to end you up in prison. The 600 you can go fast but does take a bit more effort and definitely gives you the feeling of going fast.

Less power can be alot more fun Thumbs Up

Agree with the 2 bike thing, and sometimes it's not all about power.

I ride the ST1100 quite a bit, it's big and it's heavy, but it does the job of eating up miles comfortably.

When I jump on the FZ6 it has about the same power but it's so much smaller, lighter and more nimble that it feels like a 125 and I end up with a grin chucking it round a bit.

Big easy to go fast, electronic aids galore, engine exploding german wagon.

Nah, well fun Laughing I kid, he needs to try alternative stuff, stay away from the big litre bikes and get yourself some 30-50hp enduro/supermoto and a revvy 750 or a 675 again. Combine both, one is superb for faster rides, one is great for blatting through town and being a hooligan.

If I had road bikes again, I'd really want something ~85-100hp for road riding and commuting, buttered together with a 30hp 2 stroke or 40-60hp 4 stroke enduro/sumo. You can't really just have the 1, you'll get bored.

Not the bikes that are boring mate, it's the risks that ruin it.

It would be fun if there was the odd derestricted road with no speed limit to hoon on!

I do 160mph daily... they are boring Laughing Risk or not, I'd rather be able to use 90% of the bike rather than 15% or so.

Tuono V4 is meant to be a bit of a pain to service (if youre doing it yourself) or expensive due to the time it takes. Would deffo be a big factor for me if it was my only bike.

Would agree with Paddy though. Why not buy a cheap bike/scooter for <£500 and then something else for fun?
