Thanks for the reply guys 170 is way over budget I'm afraid but if you can find some coils that's great. Yes I got a rec/regulator of an x7 and it seems to be ok. It's just not charging the battery when the lights are on. I've checked for shorts etc but have not found anything untoward. Will keep looking  |

The lighting coils (i.e. extra charging coils) are only brought into play when the light switch is on.
Have you checked the coils using a multimeter? If they are ok then the problem is probably either the wiring or the headlight switch itself. you can check the coils at the multiplug where the stator wiring joins the main loom, makes more sense then fannying around dropping the oil etc to randomly change coils.
