I'm sure we all get them from time to time, questions that might seem obvious to us but a non-biker has no clue about due to never knowing anyone with a bike.

I got asked a couple tonight by the same person at work.

"This might seem a bit silly, but what do you do when it rains and you're on your bike? It's illegal to ride a bike in the rain isn't it?"

And:

Her - "Do you have motorbike boots?"

Me - "Yeah I change into my work shoes when I get here"

Her - "No, I mean like on cars you have a boot where you put shopping."

Me - "Oh you mean storage, most bikes have a bit of space under the passenger seat but it's not much."

Her - "Bikes have passenger seats? I thought to take passengers on a bike you have to have a sidecar."

Laughing

Also something that I was asked last week:

"Aren't you scared that you'll fall over when you lean to go around a corner?"

And when I asked a bit more about what she meant, she meant just falling off the side of the bike. Laughing

I'm sure I've been asked loads more in the past but they're what come to mind. So, BCF, what silly questions have you been asked by non-bikers?

Don't you get wet when it rains?

No, as long as I am travelling more than 15 mph the rain can't catch me

Really

Yes

A couple of years ago my girlfriend at the time asked if speed limits apply to bikes.

I was also giving a friend a lift on the bike once and just before she got on she asked if she has to face forwards or backwards Rolling Eyes

As long as your feet are securely on the foot rests I don't think there i anything stopping you sitting backwards if you want to.

"Would you mind terribly sir, if I deprived you of your motorcycle in order that I may test its performance?"

More than one person on here has had someone who rear-ended them claim the bike reversed into their car on the insurance form.

I didn't get asked anything stupid, but got told something where I had to keep a cool, calm poker face on the exterior, but inside I was crying with laughter.

A work colleague said to me "you and me, we both know what adrenaline's all about"

Me: "do we?"

Him: "yeah, you've got bikes and I've got golf. It's that buzz innit"

Golf. Riiiiiiiight.

Pretty sure I would get more excitement from trying to extract toast from my toaster without burning my fingers than from hitting a little ball with stick.

A guy that bugs me in the changing rooms at work has asked, "Would you wear a helmet if you didn't have to?" followed by "Petrol for bikes costs less doesn't it?" and "Why do bikes go between traffic, is it because they can't stop for too long or they overheat?"

Not usually questions but statements from other people...

"I'd kill myself on a bike".

"Bikes are too dangerous for me".

I mentioned this on another thread last week, but a work colleague of mine presumed all motorcycles were automatic, as they couldn't fathom how a gear lever would work. In his head he could only see a cars gear system.
