Hi all,

i am going to be commuting on the Yibber 125 soon from Oxford to Ealing, and will be carrying a laptop that id rather not get wet!

Can you suggest any decent backpacks or bags that would do the job of making sure my documents and electrical items stay dry in the chance of it honing it down? I have a top box but tis just a little bit too small for the laptop to fit in.

Cheers

I have a couple of bags from these guys, always keep my stuff dry and are super tough.

Inexpensive too.

Can't vouch for any of the kit (don't own) but by coincidence just had an email advert from GetGeared / Held about their waterproof luggage.

Link if you click here.

Ortleib dry bags.

They make large map cases too. Which work, even if dropped in a river and are the perfect size for a laptop.

Bin bags are good at keeping bin juice in, so probably good at keeping rain out too?

Not too hot for bungie points though.

I'd say get a bigger topbox, anything else will be inferior.

awesome thanks guys.

I did think about some heavy duty rubble sacks, however, id rather not trust my £900 mac to a £0.30p plastic bag lol

A waterproof messenger bag would work great for me.

Have you looked into kreiga bags, I have a couple and the us-20 would fit a macbook in.
I can get a picture to show if you want to see how it fits,

While its not the cheapest stuff it is very well made a defiantly waterproof

back in the day when I was a Boy Scout (no sniggering) we used to line our rucksacks with a survival bag and put all our stuff inside it. walked across Snowdonia for 3 days in the pouring rain and none of our kit got wet. Thumbs Up

I bought this for exactly the same reason..

https://www.over-board.co.uk/waterproof-backpack-20ltr-black.html

have had it few months now and works great. Have ridden through some pretty heavy rain with no leakages. very comfortable to wear too especially on the longer commutes.

I own:

https://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/drybag-daypack.html

Use it every day all year round.

https://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/motorbike-drybag.html

Used on longer trips where I don't want to take the hard luggage.

https://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/30L-dry-bag-holdall-top-opening.html

Bought before I got the hard luggage

https://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/dry-bag-holdalls.html

Bought for my dad and he uses it regularly

All have been totally waterproof and feel well made/tough, particularly the back pack.

I obviously meant bin bags, within another bag - just a standard backpack for example

I own two, large, heavy-duty ortleib dry bags, a small ortleib mobile phone bag and a large map case for my laptop. They are designed for canoeing.

I once got trapped on an island (river came up drastically overnight) and had to wade/swim off (waist deep). I stripped to my underwear and towed the large dry bag on a luggage strap behind me with my clothes in.

I once dropped the mobile phone in a loch in the bag, no worries. You can use it in the bag too (non-touchscreen).

I would not trust an expensive laptop on a motorbike to stay dry in anything else. Many things claim to be waterproof, most of them aren't when it comes to the test.

If it doesn't have a roll-down top or a rigid fitting with a gasket, it's not waterproof.

If ever I carry anything that could perish in water on the bike I always use bin liners then put the item in my ruck sack. Never failed yet and I've used this method many times in heavy rain.

The black bin liner does a good job, very thin though and prone to tears and rips, these are more durable and likely see you through a trip of several days.

I don't have a roll bag with a wet side and dry side (wish list), but stuff a wet tent outer into one of these and wet\dry segregation is effective.

Last thing I want wet is my sleeping bag, so it goes inside one also.

Got one of these too (but in blue).

Excellent bit of kit and no zips etc to let water in, it uses a roll top instead.

It is better full than empty though, it looks a bit odd otherwise and there's no pockets in it, but all in all a good bag. And waterproof too - ridden in some pretty torrential downpours and gotten drenched but the bag was dry. Thumbs Up

Peli cases.

Mount it to the back of the bike like a top case. rated to IP67, so properly waterproof. Drop proof, shock proof. Generally invincible

I've just got a second Peli 1500 case for the back of my bike

https://images.peliproducts.co.uk/3dcases/1500/1500.html

They come in all sorts of sizes, and used a lot by the UK and US military to ship delicate kit too and from arsecrackistan.

I've trusted my ~2000 USD macbook to heavy duty rubble sacks, and also my ~1700 GBP toshiba portege before that to rubble sacks. Still my first choice for transporting laptops on tours.

I put the laptop flat on a wooden cutting board, then wrap it in a rubble sack nice and flat (or two if I'm expecting end of the world floods). I then keep it in the bottom of the bag that I'm strapping to my pillion seat. The cutting board stops the force of the 200dN luggage straps from wrapping the laptop around my seat. Clothes moderate the force of the straps against the top of the laptop.

Dry bags are great, but I find them slightly less convenient in actual use, as you have to take everything out to get at anything at the bottom. Normally I use a gym bag (of irrelevant waterproofing) and keep clothes etc. in rubble sacks, separated based on soiling. I've ridden 4+ hours on the autobahn in rain heavy enough to slow traffic to 30mph (visibility about 10 meters) with nothing getting wet.

Top-boxes are much more likely to rattle laptops to death. I can't count how many containers of milk I've exploded, cream tubs, glass jar lids popped off, meat and veg packs ripped, etc. in my top boxes. I'm not mentioning eggs because I've long since stopped putting eggs in there. If you must transport in a topbox, pack in a bag with sufficient padding to absorb vibrations / being flung around.

Held roll bag: awesome bit of kit, strong cheap and waterproof.

Cameron Barker rolltop panniers: had less than 1k out of them before structural failure. can probably restitch.

Givi E45: I live out of one, cheap for a box, waterproof, bombproof, crashproof.

As mentioned above...

www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/motorbike-drybag.html

I've got this and it is excellent quality. Totally waterproof and well made.

I've used it kayaking and on the motorbike. A gift at 11.99.

Lomo's grey backpack also mentioned gets consistently good reviews.

I can vouch for the Lomo 30l backpack. Absolutely excellent. I've taken it through torrential weather, and it's kept my gear dry. Plus, it was quite cheap at £25.

another plus Thumbs Up for the Lomo dry bags.
I have 1 x 30ltr, 2 x 40ltr and 1 x 60 ltr bags
I also have an ortleib rack pack which is huge, probably too huge for day to day use. & probably cost more than what I paid for all the Lomo bags together The 30ltr Lomo is probably the most practicle
