Assuming cost is irrelevant (it is not really irrelevant, however I am prepared to spend money for a good bit of kit) what are the best gloves I can buy?

I want a good quality pair of gloves that will last me several years.

At the moment I have a pair of RST Slice gloves, they work great in cold weather and in hot and they don't leak when raining although I would not recommend them as a winter glove.

Best thing to do is take a ride into a bike shop and ask which gloves are the best for your specific type of riding e.g. summer, winter. Then try them all out and see which is the most comfortable.

Agree with that.

This has reminded me I need to dig out my winter gloves.
I use the two finger lobster claw type.
Can recommend this type (FWIW mine are Hein Gericke) and this year it was May before I stopped using them.

Thumbs Up

Heard good things about 'knox' gloves.

Also the top Alpinestars ones!

I just have £40 buffalo ones.. seem fairly decent.

Thumbs Up

alpinestars, jet road goretex for winter and gp plus for summer

if you go shopping to buy them say goodbye to £260 (130 each)

I know my sizes and trawl ebay, bought the last pair of goretex for £35 and the gp plus for £40 both "new without tags"

I have these Very Happy

And these Very Happy

As others have said, more than one pair is best. The HG lobster gloves I use as my winter gloves but haven't stopped using them commuting since this time last year I think rather than using summer gloves. (They're comfortable and hands will never get cold)

https://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTVUDT9FhPXr4YI7drnLsoRCHAZxndm5JisqcPGHMvakVuKYLhNYAQRB0RmVg

The Knox Handroid gloves are good now they are bedded in, but I suppose it's the same with any glove. I liked them as soon as I saw them, with the robot fingers and all Razz But they are a very good glove for protection and very comfortable.

https://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT4SaAM1bsNEW6P7b4ESfd4c-HJHXhDMoLwfta5t_bBfkTDhgc6mQ

I'd recommend both gloves, don't buy just the one pair and don't bother with 'inner gloves' they are useless.

If your hands still get cold with the HG Lobster gloves then get handlebar muffs, I'd recommend Tucano Urbano, one of the best on the market (pic from fellow BCFer)

Pfft.

I just wear my summer ones all year round.

My fingers have swollen up on nights when I commute and it's so cold they're literally blue and I'm shaking like a crack addict in a meth lab.

I have the Knox handroid mainly because they look the best. There's little to go on as far as safety reviews out there (nothing if you want it objective/scientific). So cool was my only buying criteria Smile

I would never buy another set of Alpinestars, spent £90 on them and the right hand one fell apart in about 3 months. Their customer services did not give a shit and the place I bought them from was 200 miles away. Rolling Eyes

I have had several pairs of cheaper leather gloves that lasted 3 times as long.

+1 for Buffalo as they never seemed to start to smell like other gloves I had.

Had mine 6 months, don't smell! But they haven't got too wet mind.

I wonder if anybody has tried layers of gloves? I have some thin woolen ones which might fit into latex gloves, with just summer gloves over those. The cheap option appeals at the moment!

If you are doing that you need thin inner gloves.
If you can get silk ones.
I find the army/camping stores sell them for some reason.

I say that because too bulky gloves affects how you handle the bike and can actually restrict blood flow so make your hands colder.

If it's cold and wet latex inners might be a good idea as they may counteract some windchill. If caught out I know people have used the disposable gloves found at diesel pumps at petrol stations as an inner liner.

I'll be doing short hops during the colder months and experimenting with staying warm, no harm in giving it a go then Smile

In the spirit of experimentation though, how long would you say it takes to get to your coldest in say 5c/dry at 30-40mph?

Agree +1

With Secondary Raynauds my hands change colour faster as well which can cause severe pain. But managed in snow and rain with normal summer gloves last year same this year.

Can't wear thick gloves as they interfere with my riding and using the controls. Old gloves were the ones below.

And handguards/muffs! I heard of a DIY solution for muffs involving jiffy bags so am thinking of handguards!

I've been experimenting with melting crap records (think 'pan pipe moods' etc) in the oven an creating fruitbowls/plantpots. Depending on the shape of the thing the record melts over, it might be possible to do it DIY and 'mould' some crude ones. If its pennies then why not?

I wore my gloves through summer (not sure if they're winter or summer, they're just gloves) and they got horrendously sweaty and smelly. So yes, definitely buy a summer and winter pair!

As others said, you'll need several sets. I always carry two pairs, so if one lot get drenched going into work I have a nice dry set to ride home in. Getting a set that you actually like is difficult, some that feel nice in the shop often don't work so well on the bike. If possible try them on and find a handlebar sized rail in the shop to grip and get a feel for what they'll be like when riding. I always do this and often find the gloves are too tight in one part or another, which will cause numbness in the real world.

Don't be surprised if a year from now you have half a dozen or more pairs that didn't make the grade sitting in a box in the shed!

As for winter gloves we had a mega debate last year, general consensus was just get a set of Tucano Urbano handlebar muffs as they're infinitely better than any gloves for keeing hands warm and dry.

I went into a local shop and tried on a load of gloves, I found the RST make fit perfectly in medium so I purchased....

RST Stunt gloves for summer £39.99

https://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/spenspuma/RST-Stunt-1651-Glove.jpg

RST Alpha Waterproof gloves for winter £34.99

https://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/spenspuma/rst_gloves_alpha_black__62240_zoom.jpg

The summer gloves I've worn for 5 weeks now and they are mega comfortable, you hardly know you've got them on, and the airflow through them is brilliant...in hot weather they are a godsend.

The waterproof winter ones I haven't used yet, but my hands were cold this morning on the way to my mod1 so I reckon ill be digging them out soon.

Both pairs for the money are brilliant.
