Hi asking this question on behalf of another member on the Practical Sportsbikes FB page.

The bike was fine when I got it, but the rev counter has started playing silly buggers. I switch the ignition on and the needle goes round to about 8k, then after a couple of seconds goes round as far as the stop. I have tried pressing the Volt/Rev counter button but the needle just swings back and fore. I have also tested the voltage going through the charging system at different revs and with the lights on and off, but the voltage, if a bit low, is fine. Does anyone here know what the culprit could be and if there is an easy fix

Its really bugging me as I am sure I have come across this before and that it was battery related...

I know on later bike the Tacho is used for basic fault codes .... but not on bikes this old, but not sure

Thanks Smile

start at the basics, check all the connector, depending on how it works, while the bike is not tunning but ignition is on the signal line will either be high ot low. this may well be 12v or 0v, or if they went full logic level then it maywell only be 6 volts.

the rest will depend on how they signal the clock, does it count pulses, pulse dureation or read an analouge from the pulse strait from the coils

or you could just replace the thing, pretty sure a guy i know said he had the same issues years ago and the only way he could find to fix it was to replace with a new unit

my GPz550 did that after I fell off it, the stator coils are screwed to the inside of the left engine cover and the flywheel is on the end of the crank, when you fall off the stator case flexes and the stator crashes into the magnets on the flywheel, killed my stator and had to remove all the bits of broken magnet best as I could, engine bars are a good idea to avoid this
