Quick question regarding dark tints. I'm used to riding in a dark tint, changing for a clear visor at night. Over the winter I bought a new helmet that has clear visor with a pinlock included.

For a small price difference, I can get a dark pinlock and swap it over or I can get dark visor which is pinlock ready.

Is it bad for pinlock systems to be frequently removed and inserted? Which would you chose; dark visor or dark pinlock; and why?

Pure dark visors look cooler IMO.

I'm not sure what they're like when removed or swapped around often, but from a couple of YouTube videos I've seen regarding pinlocks..

A clear visor with a tinted pinlock can still let sun glare in around the edges, so it's better to have a tinted visor with a clear pinlock.

Ideal situation would be:

1 x tinted visor with clear pinlock
1 x clear visor with clear pinlock

Of course that wouldn't be too cheap..

Would depend the helmet for me - if its an easy visor removal id just have two visors as i do now, if its a fiddley one and i really liked the helmet id probably go pinlock. Good if youre in slow traffic in colder months to reduce fogging too, although plenty of sprays etc that work fairly well on normal visors too Thumbs Up

As above is what works for me.

I find that if the weather doesn't look to be sunny all day I just pop a pair of sunglasses on under the clear visor. Saves having to fiddle about with the piddly Arai visor changing system Thumbs Up

Pinlock do an insert that changese from clear to dark based on the might coming through it. Not sure on how good it is but might be worth a look.

Clear with a pinlock, and dark visor with nothing for me. Typically when i used a dark visor, fogging isn't too much of an issue.

I have the pinlock that darkens automatically, and I can't recommend it. I often ride at sunrise/sunset and it doesn't get dark enough to be effective. I've bought a Shoei with integrated sunvisor instead (creating the new problem of the sunvisor fogging up in certain conditions...).

I've read that they shouldn't be inserted and removed a lot, so I'd go for a dark visor.

As an alternative to a pinlock, get a foggy mask which you can use with both visors.

I ride clear and dark visor as I wish. It's a 30 second job to swap visors on my Arai, and I carry the clear with me if I'm using the other.
I personally think pinlock are good (even though I've not yet fitted mine to the clear visor) but think they'd become buggered if swapped between visors often. I would say fit it to your clear one and leave it there.

its already been said the the tinted pinlock is still in the "legal"light range and isnt dark enough for the low evening sun in the eyes.
that said it is really nice on a bright day just to take the glare off things.
if youve got the bag space for a black visor i would vote that ftw.
cant stand sun glasses, ive no idea how specoids put up with that crap on thier nose/ears.

I may have gone overboard, but I ride all year round and in all weather, I use :

Clear visor with pinlock, dark visor without, foggy mask to deflect breath from glasses, vinyl sunstrip on both visors to deal with low sun at dawn/dusk.

Vinyl sunstrip is probably awkward if one rides chin-on-the-tank, but great for mostly upright riding.

Same here, clear visor & a light reactive pinlock, to be fair it works OK enough during the middle of the day but during the commuting hours with the sun low in the sky it's just not dark enough.

Dark visor it is! Thanks for the input.

As to those with no pinlock in dark visors, do you not find you need the dark visor the most in the cold winter time with low sun?

Might need a pinlock on the dark visor if I didn't have a foggy mask. A bit of tape or a vinyl sunstrip on the clear visor is more use when the sun is just above road level.

You'll more than likely need a pinlock for that dark visor also.
I have a clear visor with pinlock, and a dark visor with pinlock.
I started like you with one clear with pinlock and a dark visor pinlock ready, but no pinlock. Without the pinlock it will mist up.
Buy 1-of-each. You'll thank yourself for it.

Oh wow, that looks like what I used to do with electrical tape for winter sun, but used to come off! Nice one! Wonder if our Marmalade makes them *wonders off for to a PM*

I'd go for clear visor/clear pin lock and then get a tinted visor from RaceVisors.co.uk, probably won't need a pin lock with the tinted visor, usually if its bright enough for a tinted visor, it'll be warm enough to not steam up.

Secondary internal sun visor FTW. Can't be arsed with fucking about with swapping visors.

I wear a cheapo helmet with an dual visor system. Better than swapping visors.

I have a clear visor with a light reacting pinlock. I think it works a treat. I don't care whether it looks good/cool, because I am not and never have been a slave to fashion or consumerism. I like it because it works for me. Thumbs Up
