Signed up for one a few months ago but have just seen their website which gives details of other Constabulary's taking part - £12.00 through Gloucestershire Police for 2 day (consecutive Sundays) classroom tuition and supervised rideout.

Probably worth it for that amount of money if it's going to improve your riding skills and awareness.

I've just registered my interest for bikesafe-london at the Ace Cafe and they're going to contact me.

Only thing i'm worried about is that *cough* i'm meant to be restricted *cough*. And the Blueflame exhaust on my bike is /quite/ loud.

Do you think they'll mention any of it?

All sounds good only problem is my mate is a bit worried because his restrictors have fallen out and if he is asked to make progressive speed then surely the officers will notice something isn't right with the bike. Confused

I did a bikesafe course in Embra a while back - it was free and well worth going along. They specified at the theory night that if you showed up with a black visor or an illegal can or number plate then you would not be going anywhere with them. It was really worthwhile going along to though.

It must be down to the Police riders then, i've heard totally conflicting stories about this in the past which is why i'm probably going to wait a while before giving the course a go. Sad

Have yet to do it myself (will though), but everyone I have heard has loved it.

Police look more to your skill and if you are over reaching it, how safe you are etc, not what your bike is like (other than road-wprthy ness).

Again, this is from what I have heard (including girlfriend who did it, illegal can, small plate etc).

The police are more concerned about you becoming a better rider, as they hate washing bikers off the side of the road, so consider it an amnesty while you are there. They will turn a blind eye to anything that is not too stupid.

Individual police on the day may have different attitudes, however.

I reckon there is a major difference doing a course like this with an illegal can and riding outside the limits of your licence (i.e. on a derestricted bike that you're not licenced for).

The latter invalidates your insurance for sure and would cause the police major hassle in the event you had an off. I think if they realised they'd probably regard it as taking the piss and might well throw the proverbial book at you.

For those in the midlands, Warwickshire police do a brilliant weekend Bikesafe course for £25 which includes lunch at Gaydon Heritage Motor Centre on both days. Here is the link:

Me and Hubby did one at the ace cafe last sunday. It is well worth doing and they really don't care if you have a loud can or small numberplate, we had 2 people with illegal cans and numberplates and they didnt bat an eyelid. Also with the restrictor they don't check for it, all they do is check your bike over to make sure it is road worthy. They are a really nice bunch at the ace. We paid £25 each including lunch but it has gone up to £30 now. Still think its worth the money though. Do it, you have nothing to lose by it and you might learn something!
