PostPosted: 18:32 - 08 May 2014    Post subject: Advice on Which bike to Get After Passing Test Reply with quote

It's still early but i plan to do my tests in June or July at worst (DAS). So long as all goes well, i would like advice from you helpful experienced people as to what type or model of bike to get.

I'm planning to travel once or twice a month to visit relatives (near 200 miles there and back) and using locally for a burn now and again. I'm thinking along the lines of something that has good economy but can take 75% of the journey to my relatives on dual carriageways/motorways. Budget would be around £3000 but can stretch a little.

Looked around already, but just cannot decide whats best Confused

Thanks in advance, look forward to your advice.

Um, that's quite a big list.

Are there any styles that you like or have ruled out?

Is sir particularly long or short legged? Any back/neck/wrist/hip issues?

Any feelings about number of cylinders or configuration?

touring or adventure type, cruiser last resort, as long as i can pack a couple of things such as waterproofs etc.

Sir is 5'11", standard legged for height. No issues with health.

Not too bothered about config really.

I'd be looking at either a Versys or V-Strom 650 as a starting point for comparison then. You'll get pretty low mileage at that budget.

The other option is to Paddy it and churn through loads of bikes to see what you like.

They do look good for a start. Not a bad price too second hand having had a quick flick through ebay. Thanks, awaiting the "don't get that, you want...." replies Smile

Not a great deal of point asking this kinda question on any online site. Especially if you already have a bike in mind, people will just shit on your opinions of that bike.

Many people hate the Bandit. I went with it anyway, it's done all I've asked, if not done more and from what people said about it, I weren't expecting it to be as quick as it is (even though there are faster 600's).

Just find the style of bike you're after, find different bikes with that styling, read a few reviews and think of things such as costs etc and even things like MPG is something to think about when deciding on the bike you want. Then go get a bike. Whatever you choose some people will hate it, think it's ugly or whatever. Others will love it and think it's the one of the best bikes ever.

It sounds like you're going to be doing a fair mileage on fast roads so I'd go for something with good wind protection and panniers. Fighting the wind on a naked bike is tiring.

Off your cross, it's the most popular bike in the UK. You're not a persecuted minority.

A GSX650F might be worth considering....

It's basically a refreshed Bandit in a Sports Tourer shell (Suzuki stole the looks off of the GSXR a little on the front end). Great wind protection (as it's fully faired), very stable, built for long rides and fun for short blasts, and generally has very good reviews everywhere. Oh and spares and new parts are cheap and plentiful.

Plus - you could get a good condition low mileage one for 3k or thereabouts. Worth a thought.

Window shop on biketrader or mcn bikes for sale.

CBR600F would be a good buy for that budget.
or
SV650
ER6F
GSX650F as previously mentioned. Nice looking bike.

There are loads of all of these for sale in your budget.

Go to a local dealers and sit on a few. Buy the one YOU like instead of what internet strangers like.

Anything modern and Japanese isn't really going to have any major issues.

Thanks for the replies everyone. There are a few here so will start doing some homework and browsing if the opportunity comes. I am totally new still to the whole bike thing, so models and numbers are still new to me (except for manufacturers).

Thumbs Up
