The GS500 is 44.5PS or 51BHP as standard.

And yes if you require restriction due to your licence then get it done!
Plus that way you will get the certificate, cos your insurance may require to see it.

You can always remove the restriction at anytime too, and keep the certificate, but remember you would technically be riding without a licence and thus without insurance.

This is not something you should make the decision about with the results of a poll. You probably have worked out it is illegal to ride it without the restrictors in it if you're meant to be restricted. Never had any problems with police with this myself, and have never heard of anyone having problems with the police (myself, and quite a lot of other people here are on 33bhp licenses) but it could happen, and you'd probably get done for riding without a license and without insurance. If you have an insurance claim they might try to wriggle their way out of paying if you don't have the 33bhp things in the bike, but again I've never heard of anyone having this.

Be aware of the risks, and make your own mind up about it. Personally I would, and have done before, and when I'm back on the roads would do it again. Don't make your decision based on the poll here, make your own decision.

If you are on a restricted licence, and your bike is above that limit, then YES get it restricted.

In the event of a crash, do you really want to pay for everything yourself (as your insurance will be invalid) and risk prosecution and the loss of your licence?

Do you know how many people I have known who are victims of un-insured drivers, including a mate who lost his 12 year old daughter?

The bike dealer sent them back to F1 International along with the cert, plus my restriction was up when I had them removed one whole year ago now Smile (God it really doesn't seems that long ago Confused).

Go to your local motorcycle dealer, and they will have to order you a set and fit them, and no you can't fit them yourself.

And as for performance, they don't affect it at all that much, only time I ever noticed my restriction was where I was overtaking and on motorways, where it would touch 80 and then slowy hit the top speed of about 95MPH (top speed on an unrestricted bike is about 115MPH).

Nope they've GOT to be fitted by an authorised dealer to be legal and I very much doubt F1 would allow such a thing anyway, the dealer wouldn't either or they could get prosecuted etc.

I think they were £150 fitted If I remember rightly, its only two small washers in the Carbs, so its not a big job.

Both times I've had them fitted to my GS5's (I've had 2 of em) the charge was £150 so I have no clue if that included labour etc.

As for performance against car's, yes it will out accelerate them to about 60-70MPH.
0-60 is about 5-6 seconds-ish though I've never timed it.

The GS is a good bike and especially for a new rider, however you will get bored of it after a while. Smile

Not true as there is nothing legal about the restriction kits.

Legally the bike must not produce more than 33hp, and there is nothing legal about showing that it does not produce over that figure. All the certificate does is give you something to wave at a policeman to give some kind of support to your claim that it is restricted.

FI will not issue the certificate unless the kit is professionally fitted though.

All the best

Keith

the performance will be noticeable jon, on my vfr 400 the bike pulls till about 80, slows a tiny bit to 100 when it feels like it stops dead there, then it sort of rolls a bit if you have a long enough straight to 113(ish)then down hills it goes to 120(ish). but it does 100 in 4th 5th and 6th gear so its obviously the restrictors kicking in. thing is jon you may as well get them so you have the certificate to prove you are restricted, my insurance haven't asked to see my certificate but i'm leaving mine in a bit to get used to the bike (from a 50 to a 400 is quite a change...but its till not fast enough Twisted Evil )

Yup this is very true as I've found out recently.

You don't /have/ to pay FI International for a kit.. if you can get a dyno done to show your bike topping out at 33bhp that's perfectly viable.

Problem is, that requires a kit made (most usually a throttle stop in carbs) and then dyno time, so it works out at around £120, still a little cheaper than FI International kits though.

Also depends on what is easiest to get done! FI kits are going to be less hassle probably.

i am sure if you gave dyno guy a score he would sort you out Wink

i have a cdi that is from an older bike that make 33 bhp so recon i could ge away with lobbing that in Neutral

If they dyno it , just bugger a spark plug Wink that should sort it out.

Have fun mate Very Happy and rember, dont go off road hehehe
