I don't know if this is any good or not, but a friend passed on these details to me and said I had nothing to lose going along to see what it was all about.

There is a riding club called "Thames Vale Advanced Motorcyclists" who do all sorts of bike meets, advanced training, track days and general get togethers, they have 100's of members and are having a meet up/introduction to what they are all about this Sunday at St Crispins School in Wokingham, Berkshire. It is from 9am to midday and you will get the opportunity to be taken out by an observer to see where you can improve your riding.

If you like what you see, you can join up. The criteria for joining is committing to passing your Advanced test, which can give you up to 10% off your insurance!

You join for around £85, that gives you 1 years membership and pays for your advanced test. The club will then get you up to scratch to take the test, all included in that price!

After that it is around £25 per year membership. Sounds like a bargain to me!

If I have time, I will definitely be sticking my head in along with Scratchy, anyone interested come along!

Don't know mate, I am sure they probably have days out up there, I know they go to France! So hitting the Scottish roads is probably something they do.

I will have to go on Sunday to have a look.

Perhaps I should have posted this in the South East section.... Ooops....

It sounds like the Institute of Advanced Drivers or ROSPA test...

It is a common misconception that you can pass your 'advanced test' . There is no such thing, you do lessons with an instructor and when he thinks you are of a certain standard, you are allowed to join the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

You can spot an advanced motorist a mile off as they all wear white helmets and flourescent vests and ride in a pointedly 'safe' manner when they think someone is watching. From the few I have met, it can be quite a cliquey society many of whom look down their noses at us mere non-advanced drivers.

[/ANECDOTAL GENERALISATION MODE]

True about the insurance though.

That's not quite right, Stinkywheely.
You ride out with an observer as often as you want. Not strictly lessons, but he does point out what you're doing wrong, and what you should be doing. It can be bloody annoying, especially when I thought I was a half decent rider anyway.

When the observer thinks you've reached the required standard, you get the "honour" of an observed ride with a senior observer, who decides if you are ready for the test. After my ride we stopped at a busy biker cafe, and the senior observer spent 20 minutes listing all the things I'd done wrong - the bikers around us got quieter and quieter, inwardly laughing their arses off I expect. Fortunately he said I was "up to the required standard" - twat!!

Next, I booked THE TEST!
I've never been so nervous in my life, worried about letting myself down I reckon. Anyway, to cut a long story short - I PASSED.

I then got to join the IAM and become a full member, rather than the associate that I was.

The IAM course was the single best thing I ever did to improve my riding. I'm safer and faster, and definitely a smoother rider. The IAM is big on "progressive" riding - not taking stupid chances in traffic, but planning ahead and recognising safe opportunities to get through traffic.

If you want to improve your riding and reduce your chances of becoming another biking accident statistic, do the course.

Bikers are a breed apart, and it seems to me that no two bikers are the same, so the IAM will not be everyones cup of tea, but like they say - what have you got to lose.

Can't disagree with that!
And they do seem to favour "safe" bikes ie VFRs, BMWs etc (apologies if I've labelled anyone here!). And as for Sam Browne belts....!!!

Right, does anyone want this soapbox!!!
