Hi I know its all down to personal choice but here goes. Ive looked at loads of bikes and the Aprilia Touno has caught my eye.Im still doing my training and have asked 2 of the instructors their opinion, 1 said buy a bike you can learn to ride on as if you pass your test you will only have done 8 days riding and dont have enough experience for that bike, the other said buy the bike you wont so you dont waste money and learn to ride it.Now I will make up my own mind but would value some informed opinions. Also is this bike a naked race bike or as I think a sports tourer.Cheers NP

It's a hooligan naked bike - it's no sports-tourer!

You will get all opinions here - I sit in the 'buy what you want' camp, tempered with 'but be aware of your riding limitations'.

All bikes have a throttle. How it rides is down to your self-control. It's NOT a novices bike if ridden as the makers intended though and it will bite you hard in the wet if you make a mistake.

This is what it's for.

If you intend to ride with both wheels on the road, perhaps buy something else.

Have a look at the "Yamaha YBR-125 to YZR-1000R" thread in New Bikers. All the answers you are looking for can be extracted from that thread.

If you want it get it, but for god sake respect the thing or you won't last long.

I would advise against getting one as a first big bike.

It wasn't my first big bike, I got a go on someones at the BCF BBQ.

All I can say is if you do intend to buy one, go careful. The rear brake is somewhat non existent when the bike is warm due to the location of the MC/res and when its popped up in 2nd gear, up a hill, in the wrong lane going past a car... your pants will be shat when you can't bring it down gently. Laughing

Should add, I've ridden a lot of bikes and owned just as many... nothing 4 stroke has had the hit that the Tuono had.

Yep. One of my favourites is something the guy who sold me the Thunderace said... "Treat her like a princess or she'll rip your head off!" Basically respect the machine.

I do think in this case that Thunderace man with his nice soft comfy smooth 145bhp bike will be fine and find that it's like riding a sofa that can if required go ballistic. Smile

Mr Tuono 1000, however might as well jump on a hungry angry Bull, and then wack it in the bollocks with a red hot steel poker! It'd hurt no more than the Aprilia bucking bronco that's for sure! Laughing

Vid's and pics of the carnage and destruction of human and alloy/plastic molten remains very required! Thumbs Up

The twin's okay. The V4 is a hardcore death dealer.

Having owned one, it's a brilliant and enjoyable bike, but definitely not a first bike (never mind a first big bike).

The Thunderace is not an equivalent comparison. It's hardly slow, but it's heavy and smooth and soft. The Tuono is lary and unstable. It doesn't really have an easy going 'pootle about gently' mode.

In fact, there aren't many bikes that would be less suitable as a first bike. Maybe a Moto Morini Corsaro. Or a Ducati 1198. Pretty much any IL4 would be less intimidating and probably more forgiving.

I disagree. The V4 is significantly faster, but it's also a lot more stable. It's easy to ride fast, especially with APRC and ABS. The twin isn't nearly as 'planted' (i.e. hardly any weight on the front end, most of the time), and traction control is entirely up to the rider's wrist. If I started from scratch, the V4 wouldn't intimidate me nearly as much as the twin.
