PostPosted: 21:58 - 30 May 2014    Post subject: Recommendations for a 2 day trip? Reply with quote

Hi,
I will be visiting London for business in a few weeks and have 2 days to rent a bike and ride around. Can anyone recommend a good 2 day trip? What areas would be easy to reach from London but still get me out to the country side? Small roads, small towns and villages, a few winding roads, etc.

Thanks for any recommendations.
Chris

Are the two days totally free time or do you need to return to london each night?

Any ideas what bike (engine size particularly)/how many hours a day you would be comfortable to ride?

Lots of places, just depends on distance really Razz and if you're on a little 125cc or not Sad

2 whole days. Very Happy I expect 6-8 hours a day on the bike and a few hours sight seeing (taking pics etc.). I'm looking for something in the 600cc+ size. I lived in Japan for years and I'm quite comfortable on small winding roads.

I'm biased but the area south of London is the nicest IMO.

From central London, head for Boxhill and Rykas Cafe, preferably on a Sunday in good weather. Very popular and loads of bikes to stare at.

Then head down the A24 towards the coast and turn of onto the A271 sign posted Petworth/Midhurst - a great biking road.

At some point, turn south and amble to Brighton for fish and chips on the beach.

Return to London via the A21 or A22 which are both nice roads for most of their length. If you get bored of the large A roads, there are numerous small B roads that come off the A roads.

Apologies, not great directions - get a map or sat-nav and plan in advance. Have fun Smile

Thanks for the recommendations. Is south an easier ride than going north? What is the weather like at the end of June?

It turns out I will not have to return to London between the two days. Are there any recommendations for a BB or Hostel at the end of a day of riding?

Getting up super early and heading for Wales would be my choice. Virtually everywhere north of Merthyr is a stones throw from an excellent road.

It very much depends how far you think you can realistically travel, you could be in the Cotswolds in 90 minutes or mid Wales in less than four hours, either would be a good idea.

Also known as the A272 Smile

Known as the Road of Death due to bikers love of getting close with trees and dry stone walls.

Also Checkout the A286 and A285 both scenic and challenging in places.

The A283 is nice too. And Bury Hill on the A29 can be focusing Shocked

Email sent Thumbs Up

All of these are on the "bury hill" route that I sent to you. I reckon you could do those in a day and return to London. If you want an overnight stop you should be able to get a resonable priced room at the Premier Travel Inn at Petersfield if you book asap (on the Bury Hill / route at the end of the A272):

https://www.premierinn.com/en/search!execute.action

End of June should be nice weather but you never know.

edit: just check availability at Premier Travel Inn at end of June - full. Just google some B&B's, you can't go too far wrong.
