Hi all im looking to get back on a bike again after 6 years off (1st child etc) Last bike i had was a 2007 sv650s sport but havent got enough for another so have about 1k ready for a bike, i mainly do journeys to work and back around 15 miles a day and would use it for a few ride outs or pottering about, i dont want a cruiser its just not me (27 years old and still a bit lively) so just wanted some advice, id like 600cc or above so no 125's 250's or 400's, dont mind old bikes as am a mechanic so can sort it, have been looking at zx6r, honda vtr1000 firestorms and yamaha thunderaces but any other suggestions? Many thanks in advance

1k doesn't get you lots of bike, you'll find a few decent ish ZX6Rs and tatty old CBR600s.

Was looking recently at the 1-1.5k range and there isn't really that much.

If you don't mind older bikes, I might know of a tidy VFR750 for that sort of money.................. Whistle

Plenty of bikes under a grand, especially if you aren't too fussy about cosmetics.

That said I bought an immaculate ZZR1100C for £900. A pretty clean FJ1200 for £600.

The obvious 600 Fazers and Bandits are available with change.

I'm surprised you think there isn't much around Paddy, unless you are after a certain demographic.

If your car is a bit special, precious and or expensive to run, then for gods sake don't get a bike that's fussy or costs a lot to run as well or you'll always be broke.

It sounds like you need just a decent workhorse but you want something 600cc or over so there's loads of choice out there especially in older big bike examples. But as I'm sure your aware running costs, consumables and tyres etc hit your pocket harder than on a smaller bike, even if the bikes themselves cost less.

Sounds like a 500cc twin is not going to be your thing despite the cheap to own and service costs.

I know you will get a tidy Honda VTR1000 for £1k and so would you get a clean RF900, ZX9R B-series, Thunderace, or any of the late FZR's Thundercats, or an old baggy CBR600. I'd bet a ZZR600 or GSXF600 would be easily found in your budget, as would a Bandit, early Fazer or something like a ZR7 maybe?

I'd probably go for a 600cc class bike as a maximum personally, as if you ended up with a £1000 ZZR1100 or other big heavy fast litre+ bike, it's going to be a liability or even dangerous at that price, with 20years of chassis wear etc. Big heavy stuff would rape your wallet if you want to keep it safe, legal, and on the road.

You probably won't get anything decent for under 1k. Especially around this time of the year when there is a demand for cheap bikes.

I've got about 3-4k cash for a bike, and cannot find anything for reasonable prices. Everything is so expensive lol

Autumn-Winter you can get something like ZX6R G/J for under 1k. But not now.

ZZR600 as Stevo said.

Cheap as chips to buy and insure and the E models had a 20+ year production run so used parts cost next to nothing. I bagged a set of practically mint OEM exhausts for £21 the other day on ebay, can't complain at that price Laughing

This is mine, cost me £900 with 22k on the clock:

eBay says otherwise.

ITT: People who don't know how to buy a cheap bike.

You'll pick up a decent enough steely CBR600F for that money.

I've never bought a bike for over a grand, I've bought three for there or there abouts, one was a bit of a lemon but was very well disguised as an honest bike (ZZR600).

My CBR600F was used and abused for miles and miles, stolen multiple times, ragged by me, commuted on it for the best part of two years at 1000 miles a month. In the end the second gear packed up, it needed two new tyres and some other bits and pieces. It just wasn't worth putting the money in to any more and was broken for spares. Reckon I did over 20,000 miles on it from memory, never once left me stranded.

https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/CBR600F/Picture015.jpg

My Divvy cost the same, had it about 18 months now, toured Europe, commuted through London daily, ridden hard every day. It's much more fun to ride than it looks. Clutch is beginning to slip a bit when pushed but other than that it's cost me nothing but oil and filters to run.

Both times I spotted the bike on eBay, went to view, placed the cash in the sellers hand and had the bike outside of Ebay. My tip would be to have the cash ready and to keep a good eye on the listings near you. Be prepared to walk away if something doesn't seem right on a test ride.

I have an sv650 at home that I could ride if I wanted to. It has tax and mot and has sat there doing nothing for the last six weeks.

Its probably quicker point to point than my divvy for most journeys, similar top speed, probably quicker to 60, certainly better handling and better mpg. Just bores me though, the divvy is hardly a set your world on fire bike, but going fast on it is rewarding, the sv just feels neutral everywhere.

For the same money I'd have a steely cbr600. Every. Single. Time.

When i was looking in that price range the thundercat and zzr6 always looked better buys as they were less desirable than similar aged cbr6, gsxr6 and zx6r.

Had my £1200, 19000 mile thundercat for 3 years now, use it all year round and the only thing I've changed on it is the choke cable at £13.

Thumbs Up

Tommy had a reasonably priced ZX6R G model for around that sort of budget, worth dropping him a shout.

If situations had been different, I'd have had it off him myself, but I don't actually *need* the bike and have plenty of other bikes taking up space/money.

Where? Examples?

Having shopped for one over Winter, it took me ages to find a decent buy. I suspect our understanding of 'tidy' is very different. As far as I could see, at £1k you'd just about get something that's basically shagged (high mileage, crash damaged and/or molested, and likely mechanically problematic). There are many such examples.

You're looking at closer to £1.5k for a well used but honest example that's probably been lightly molested, and £1.5-£2.5k for a 'tidy' example depending on age and mileage (tidy for me = not written off and 'mended', original bodywork and paint, no major crash damage, no bolt on tat, good consumables, no mechanical issues).

Agreed.

Having owned both bikes, I prefer the Yamaha. Looks better, and has a nicer engine (IMO).

Whittling it down to those three is as far as you need to go, just keep an eye on the usual selling places now for any of your chosen models. All the are good bikes, condition of an individual bike should be the deciding factor for which you end up with.

+1 for ZZR6. I picked mine up for £550, and although I wouldn't say its cheap to run, it's nothing I wouldn't expect from a 23 year old bike, fork seals etc.
