If you don't mind older bikes, I might know of a tidy VFR750 for that sort of money.................. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

If your car is a bit special, precious and or expensive to run, then for gods sake don't get a bike that's fussy or costs a lot to run as well or you'll always be broke.
It sounds like you need just a decent workhorse but you want something 600cc or over so there's loads of choice out there especially in older big bike examples. But as I'm sure your aware running costs, consumables and tyres etc hit your pocket harder than on a smaller bike, even if the bikes themselves cost less.
Sounds like a 500cc twin is not going to be your thing despite the cheap to own and service costs.
I know you will get a tidy Honda VTR1000 for £1k and so would you get a clean RF900, ZX9R B-series, Thunderace, or any of the late FZR's Thundercats, or an old baggy CBR600. I'd bet a ZZR600 or GSXF600 would be easily found in your budget, as would a Bandit, early Fazer or something like a ZR7 maybe?
I'd probably go for a 600cc class bike as a maximum personally, as if you ended up with a £1000 ZZR1100 or other big heavy fast litre+ bike, it's going to be a liability or even dangerous at that price, with 20years of chassis wear etc. Big heavy stuff would rape your wallet if you want to keep it safe, legal, and on the road. |

ZZR600 as Stevo said.
Cheap as chips to buy and insure and the E models had a 20+ year production run so used parts cost next to nothing. I bagged a set of practically mint OEM exhausts for £21 the other day on ebay, can't complain at that price
This is mine, cost me £900 with 22k on the clock:

ITT: People who don't know how to buy a cheap bike.
You'll pick up a decent enough steely CBR600F for that money.
I've never bought a bike for over a grand, I've bought three for there or there abouts, one was a bit of a lemon but was very well disguised as an honest bike (ZZR600).
My CBR600F was used and abused for miles and miles, stolen multiple times, ragged by me, commuted on it for the best part of two years at 1000 miles a month. In the end the second gear packed up, it needed two new tyres and some other bits and pieces. It just wasn't worth putting the money in to any more and was broken for spares. Reckon I did over 20,000 miles on it from memory, never once left me stranded.

My Divvy cost the same, had it about 18 months now, toured Europe, commuted through London daily, ridden hard every day. It's much more fun to ride than it looks. Clutch is beginning to slip a bit when pushed but other than that it's cost me nothing but oil and filters to run.
Both times I spotted the bike on eBay, went to view, placed the cash in the sellers hand and had the bike outside of Ebay. My tip would be to have the cash ready and to keep a good eye on the listings near you. Be prepared to walk away if something doesn't seem right on a test ride. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock.

If you can overlook a whole load of shit acessories & anodised tat then Bandit 1200's aren't a bad bet. It's got a good engine, but the cheap ones have been owned by mongs.
Firestorms are a lot of bike for the money though I've not had the chance to ride one. A mate loves his though, however comments that the fuel consumption is a bit poor. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

When i was looking in that price range the thundercat and zzr6 always looked better buys as they were less desirable than similar aged cbr6, gsxr6 and zx6r.
Had my £1200, 19000 mile thundercat for 3 years now, use it all year round and the only thing I've changed on it is the choke cable at £13.

Where? Examples?
Having shopped for one over Winter, it took me ages to find a decent buy. I suspect our understanding of 'tidy' is very different. As far as I could see, at £1k you'd just about get something that's basically shagged (high mileage, crash damaged and/or molested, and likely mechanically problematic). There are many such examples.
You're looking at closer to £1.5k for a well used but honest example that's probably been lightly molested, and £1.5-£2.5k for a 'tidy' example depending on age and mileage (tidy for me = not written off and 'mended', original bodywork and paint, no major crash damage, no bolt on tat, good consumables, no mechanical issues). |

+1 for ZZR6. I picked mine up for £550, and although I wouldn't say its cheap to run, it's nothing I wouldn't expect from a 23 year old bike, fork seals etc.
