Something about the 'Hottest Woman' thread brought this to mind, not quite sure what. Anyway, I thought this might be an interesting subject to get people's views on.

I'm quite strongly anti cosmetic surgery for the following principle reasons. It uses valuable medical and surgical resources which could be better employed elsewhere. It carries a significant degree of health risk. Nature has usually done a good job in the first place.

At this point I want to draw a clear distinction between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery used for example after serious accidents or to correct birth defects. Reconstructive surgery has my full support.

All that said, I respect an individual's right to choose.

I think it's sad the levels that people will torture themselves to try and reach what the media has decided is beautiful that month. Nevermind the fact that what we see on screen and in magazines isn't reality, it's often the product of Photoshop or strange shooting angles designed to distort the body.

If people want to spend their own cash on it, up to them if it makes them feel better. But I think the world would be a happier, healthier place if society was less interested in the superficial.

Laura, I agree. Personally I wouldn't also because i would not want to end up being surrounded by very materialist people that are with me just because the way I look.

Saying that I don't consider myself particularly ugly and there is nothing I would want to change so drastically ... maybe I would haev a competely different vies if there was something seriously wrogn with my look!

You thinking would be completely sound if we lived in a perfect world, where beauty is in the eye of the beholder and people are not ridiculed due to the way they look (either indirectly through a magazine or directly through someone taking the mic)

- If someone is flat chested and hates the fact that they are, cosmetic surgery can fix that

- If someone has a really big nose and hates it, then cosmetic surgery can fix it

Not all of these people are 'self-haters' - just people who are fortunate to have the money to change themselves for the perceived better.

As for the valuable medical resources - there will always be a supply where there's a demand.

Your body is the only thing you'll ever truly own - like you say, people should be able to do what they want with it

For the most part, I'd tend to leave it alone, there's plenty of examples of really atrocious results of vanity surgery to put me off. My boobs are about the perfect size (for myself and my various male entourage over the years have never complained).

I like my wrinkles ... they're "laughter lines", thank you very much.

Despite that, I would probably contemplate reconstructive surgery if I was in the position of having lost a breast or something, because it often has a destructive effect upon the female sexual psyche.

Obviously post-trauma (or reconstruction of congenital defects) surgery is often a necessity.

I've currently got the hump with a casting agent of my slight acquaintance, who was shown photos of my daughter (who is 16, and fairly attractive, being of Italian descent) and instantly said that my daughter was pretty but needed a nose job to get on in modelling. As the person involved was American, I didnt take major offence because Americans (and especially in that industry) have a strange mentality. Besides, my daughter isnt THAT desperate to get into modelling and I'm not so pushy as to force an unwanted operation upon her and cost myself three grand in the process.

Its only a little Roman nose-ette Rolling Eyes

I don't agree with it myself, but each to their own, to be fair.

I just think the 'ideal' which is portrayed by society in general of being a size 8-10 with hair, clothes, looks, etc 'just so' puts pressure on girls especially who want to be part of the crowd and with cosmetic surgery being more and more accessible people are choosing to have it without looking into the side/after effects fully.

Which is why I'm glad I've always been out of the 'in' crowd and happy to be different!

Just point him to the example of Cameron Diaz who has a wonderfully natural - and decidedly crooked - nose.

I agree with Laura, if people want to spend money on making themselves look 'better' it's up to them. People have been trying to change the way they look for thousands of years, that’s not about to stop.

of course ... with Italian blood ... but then again I am biased Wink

Seriously thought, don't push her about having a nose job. Mine is not particularly straight and my mum always suggested I should have it changed, possibly because hers is not very straight neither but in her younger days it wasn't done .... but it has never really bothered me, other than not being able to have it pierced as I would attract far too much attention to it and I really would like to have a little stone on its side ... well, never mind!

It has to be her decision.

Does it ? most clinics are privately set up and privately funded just for plastic surgery. The surgeons would generally be specialist and therefore not taking anything away from little jimmy's kidney transplant etc.

Also, the only PS you'll get on the NHS would be something that is causing you such mental anguish it elevates the problem to mental health issues.

That aside, if people have the money let them turn themselves into freaks !

If there wasn't the same demand for cosmetic surgery then I assume all the medical people involved would use their talents elsewhere. However I recognise that that is not going to happen.

I just think it's a shame when there are so many people who could benefit from other, often quite minor, operations that would vastly improve their quality of life. Cateract ops for example, especially in the third world.

Also, cosmetic surgery doesn't fix the root of the problem which I think is one of self image. But given the money that plastic surgeons make I don't suppose many of them refer their potential patients to a good shrink instead.

Personally if i had the money i would probably have lipo, just for confidence. I never take my top off. Im nto fat, i still get interest, but i was fat. Its all about confidence. And if for a 3 grand of your own money you can make yourself feel beautiful, i think fair play.

Also i do believe some augmentation can really make women more attractive, altho the surgeon who agreed to do jordans boobs should be shot. But if like my sorta ex who has an A cup (ie chest like a 9 year old boy) who feels really really conscious about it, i cant see anything wrong with maybe gaining a cup size or two. If it will make them more confident.

I had cosmetic surgery on my nose at the beginning of the year.

I've broken it three times, one time it was under my right eye instead of the middle of my face. At that time the NHS paid to sort it out, but the Doc did a rubbish job leaving me with a dubiously fragile boney pyramid (the bit at the top) and a massively deviated septum (the bit in the middle).

So, at the beginning of the year I paid £4000 for a different Doc to do it privately (over 1k of that was because he was "re-doing someone else's mistake")

I don't think I'm vein, nor did I hate my nose when it was crooked and deviated - I just wanted to change it and did. It never was a big deal to me, it has not changed me since but was worth every penny.

I no longer look like my nose is made of soft rubber and someone has taken their thumb and pushed it to one side...

That is a point, i have technically had cosmetic surgery. I had a mole removed from the very very very tip of my nose. Looked more like a wart. Was horrible. Got seriously pissed off with the agro from that Neutral That said after it was removed, i was 100 times mroe confident, specially with women.

exactly my feeling too!

I'm not against cosmetic surgery as such, what I am against is the way culture at the moment says you are only acceptable if you look like a fashion model. And most photos of fashion models have been seriously airbrushed (I have seen before and after examples that are scary!). But the average viewer doesn't know the photos have been doctored and thinks that it's possible to look like that, and the only way they'll be accepted is to look like that.

This is what needs to be changed.

A good friend of mine doctors photos of models for adverts, for a living.
90% of all magazine or posters you see containing beautiful people have been photoshopped.

I dont have anything against cosmetic surgery so long as people pay to do it themselves. getting prettied up on the NHS is something i am very much against however

I'm not, don't worry Very Happy Her aunt (full Italian blood) had a really BAD family nose, and had it "done" when quite young to improve her self-confidence. It certainly made a difference, she now has a very tip-tilted and cute nose (makes her look like a Jewish princess, which helped when she was living in Israel, LOL) and it has kept her looking remarkably young. But I like to point out to Anita (my daughter) that her aunt's hooter was a LOT worse than hers is.
