In the car test if you get 15 or more minors you fail. However as the bike test is in two parts, I was wondering how you can fail? Is it a certain number of minors in both mod 1+2 combined, a certain amount of minors in either mod 1 or 2 etc?

Thanks

You can fail both mod1 and mod2 individually. Failing one does not mean you've automatically failed the other, they're two completely separate tests and minors aren't carried over from your mod 1 to your mod 2.

Similar to a car test, you can fail both mod 1 and mod 2 for a build up of minors or one major.

From memory I think you can clock up 5 minors in the mod1 before it becomes a failure and 13 minors in the mod2 exam before it becomes a failure. Mod1 and mod2 are separate entities though so any minors that you pick up in your mod1 exam don't follow you through into your mod2 exam.

Obviously if at any stage during the exams the riding is deemed to be of a dangerous standard, the exam is stopped and you fail the same as you would in the car tests.

Hopefully that clears it up a bit.

Mod2 is more like a car test and easiest to pass unless you're prone to making mistakes and not confident.

MOD1 you're more likely to fail with foot down, skidding, hitting a cone or going to slow.

Just in case you didn't know, you have to have passed Mod1 before you can attempt Mod2. So if booked on the same day and you fail Mod1, you lose your fee from the Mod2 even though you didn't take it. I think the cancellation period is 3 days, but you'll have to check.

https://www.gov.uk/motorcycle-practical-test/your-test-result

5. Your test result
You’ll pass your test if you make:

5 or less riding faults on module 1
10 or less riding faults on module 2
no serious or dangerous faults
When the test has ended, you can call your instructor over so they can listen to the result and give you feedback afterwards.

The examiner will tell you:

whether you passed or not
how you did during the test
how fuel-efficient your riding is
The different types of faults
A fault can be:

a dangerous fault - involving actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property
a serious fault - which could potentially be dangerous
a driving fault - which isn’t potentially dangerous, but could become a serious fault if you make it often

Synopsis: minors mean nothing. What are you going to do, count them in your head and give up? Just pass.

As above they are separate test and do not carry over. Mod 2 is basically the same as the car test, your just going for a drive and pick up minors pretty much in the same way. Only difference is your maneuvers are done in mod 1 not during your road test.

Easiest thing to do is just pass. It's really not difficult, if you are a competent rider and your not unlucky

When I did my mod 1, was watching people before me. Was a very windy day and the cones where tiny

Poor fella went round the bend to head towards the speed trap, as he went past the wind blew a cone over. From where we were we could see he didn't touch it, but the examiner couldn't and failed him for it Laughing

Confused Not sure if joking! We were told we could fail if we didn't do appropriate obs when exiting the paddock, taxiing to parking bays and so on. The test ends when you get off the bike?

Also remember three in one category counts as a major, so you could technically fail with only 3 minors. For example on my Mod 2 I had 5 minors, 2 in one category (for clearance from parked cars). One more for clearance & I would have failed.

At discretion - I passed with 4 minors all in one box (hesitation - I was over compensating for my normally quick* riding).

I passed my car test with 19 minors back in the day, but I don't think there was a limit.

Just completed both this week.

The killer on mod 1 is putting your foot down on the figure 8. Bloke that was up for test with me did this, only thing wrong a wee touch but failed.

Not making enough speed on the trap / box stop / emergancy stop and swerve or not doing observations properly seem to be another one.

Mod 2 was just like a car test, I got nailed for my positioning turning right and not going quick enough but got a pass

Also worth noting that if you get the same driver fault 3 times or more in your Mod 1 it's classed as a serious fault and an automatic failure.

So you can have 5 separate driver faults but if you keep getting one small thing wrong you may still fail.

It sucks - I failed on Tuesday for not doing my left life saver looking far enough behind me every time.

I should have failed mod 1 but the examiner let me off with 4 minors rather than 5, which would have been 3 minors in one category = instant fail.

Still, I learned more than just "Ha, you failed!" by him not failing me so not all bad I suppose. Got mod 2 in June so will have to see how that goes.
