Was heading out of town for a bit of a hoon as the sun's out, when a metallic sort of rattle started. Went up with revs, quiet at first then got louder. No loss in power though. Was only about 10 mins from home so I stopped and had a look - sounded like it was coming from the head so I thought 'bollocks', turned around and nursed it home. Stopped off at a garage on the way, they were stumped - concluded it was something fairly terminal on one of the cams.

Eventually got back, took the tank off and had a good look for anything loose around the rocker cover. Turned out someone before me had taken the PAIR system off and attempted blanking up the ports on the head...

with a penny. Shocked

It had been silicon'd in as it kinda fitted the hole left in the original plate, obviously had rattled itself a bit loose, reed valves that were left in were then chattering about as they were open to the air and the penny was jumping up and down on top of them.

So now I've spent a bit of the afternoon making up a couple of blanking plates that'll completely replace the bodged plates instead of being out playing in the sun...

At least I'm a bit richer for it Thumbs Up

mmmmm

The Botch Of The Day award must surely always go to the bus stop biker whose pride and joy has given up the ghost due to certain foreign matter having worked its way into some seriously critical part or other whose simple wont in life was to go about its business without scoring-up a shed load of scuffing; the price of laying his tools directly on the ground. In the dirt. Amongst the grit.
And all a pretty penny to fix.

I therefore maintain that you mend your ways before ever a spanner's thrown into the works.
Your motorcycle -- alongside its attendant tools -- deserves a clean sheet in this area.
Otherwise curtains, I fear . . .

Unfortunately I don't have access to a garage, best I've got is a concreted drive. Admittedly with some gravel on top.

I'd taken the tank off (all of four bolts to undo) and had a look around the top of the engine to see if there was anything rattling around. As it turned out there was, done. If it had turned out to be something inside the head then I'm not exactly going to throw the rocker cover into the gravel and then sprinkle the innards of the head with whatever bits of dust I could find.

Nowt wrong with working on a gravel drive. Just have to take care not to get any dirt inside the bike. Fixing tractors and quads in fields or piles of shit hasn't ever caused me a problem, and new tractors are a lot more advanced than bikes.
Oh and btw it's bodge not botch Wink
