Hi all,

I am looking to buy a photosensitive visor for my Arai Quantum DNA. I know they made them for racing but I was wondering if I can buy one for myself. Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

You can get photosensitive pinlocks, why get one of those for your clear visor?

I've heard bad things about the photosensitive pin locks, but never tried one myself so can't offer first hand advice.

People have reported artifacts when viewing in certain light conditions, and distortion of light sources such as street lamps, traffic lights and headlights.

I'd rather get a spare tinted visor myself.

Thanks for your opinions. Maybe just get a tinted visor then...

I bought a photosensitive pinlock and it would barely darken in full sun. Those things react to ultraviolet light and most visors filter out most ultraviolet light. They don't filter out all of it, but the reaction was so slow I found it basically no better than just having a lightly tinted visor. Just get one of those.

Get a black one, carry a clear one as a spare.
I wouldn't recommend buying a pattern one as they're notorious for buggering side pods on Arai.

Pattern?

Pattern as in a different manufacturer producing similar items, sold to do the same job. Aka eBay cheapie knock-offs!
I think the £20 or so saved would soon be needed for replacement helmet bits - then you would need another visor as well!

Ah, is that not patent part? (Google seems to think they're the same, I hadn't heard pattern before)

I know with car parts they can sometimes be perfect OEM-copy and sometimes really quite bad-fitting... imagine with bike stuff it'd be hit n miss too.

I don't know if there is a difference, maybe officially copied patent parts perhaps available in automotive shops and non-official copies on ebay.

Digressing slightly, I've always heard great things about visors from RaceVisors.co.uk and know people who have multiple visors from them... they're non-genuine I think, so pattern?

The chamfer on the end is better on the genuine Arai is one of the differences I'm told.

I went looking for photosensitive pinlocks a few years back. The guy in HG described them best "about the closest thing to peril sensitive sunglasses ever made, always the wrong amount of tint unless the light never fucking changes. Get a helmet with a drop down sunvisor, or use daytime tint visor, or get some tape and stick it to the top of the visor, or you can pay a fortune for a graduated sunstrip that works almost as well"

As for pinlocks in general, you'll get some flares from headlights, nothing major, unless you get them full of water, so thinking you can flip open a tinted pinlock visor if it's dark is great until you realise you've blown open the seal.

For 'Pattern Parts' read 'Copy'.

For original parts by the manufacturer read 'OEM!'

Patent parts are ones that have been registered at the Patent Office by the inventor/ (usually) manufacturer.

I believe the above to be true although I may be wrong. Confused

You're probably right. After thinking about it I thought maybe patent parts were made from the manufacturers patent specs, whereas pattern were copies where the copying manufacturer just literally obtains a genuine one and copies it, not necessarily the exact dimensions/specs though
