250cc at 17 is it still possible???

I'm 17 years old and about to buy a bike. But i've had mixed answers on whether it's possible to ride a 250cc bike 25kw at 17. If it is still possible then what licences are needed?

19 - A2
24 - A or 2 years experience with A2 license so at least 21.

I don't agree with the change, but I can see why "they" would think 21 is a much more reasonable age to be fully licenced than 19, and 24 even more so. Realistically speaking I've done around about 12,000 miles a year since I was 17, I turned 24 in April and I'd say I've only really started to grow up a bit in the last year or so, age being the thing that's changed me rather than time spent in the saddle.

Still, I'm all in favour of natural selection taking its course.

They should have based it on mileage ridden, or years of experience. Proved with MOT certs or insurance no claims. As it is 24 = magically good enough to ride the biggest bike you can afford, regardless of experience.

Think they should have kept the 33bhp limit but just removed the auto-upgrade, then the A2 license should auto-upgrade after 2yrs. That way your not riding anything that powerful without further training, but you still have an incentive to go for your tests if your 17.

I'll look for a link, there is only one test in the iom, and so it would be cbt, then theory, then test. There was an advert in a mag last year £300 plus accommodation.

I can't seem to find anything any longer, but you could still do it your self. The process would be do able in about 3 weeks, apply for an IOM licence, then you take the cbt and tests.

So in theory you could take your test at 16! On a 125 and have a full A! Then when you get back to the UK you can have your licence transferred to a UK licence.
