Quick query, how big a job would it be to change a head gasket on a renault clio considering they've never done one before?

Replacing the head? Provided they have all the necessary tools (and don't assume that all the bolts will be hex or allen, them may be splined bits or similar)...

probably about an hour to strip, and an hour to rebuild and about half an hour fretting that you got the timing wrong....

Which clio ? The job itself is a piece of piss, just drain the oil, take the head off, clean the lip and install new gasket them new oil

The problem is putting the cambelt back on, making sure the timing is right. Renault are award as Fuck time belts, there pretty much the only company that have designed some weird system sp you have to use their tools not generic ones

Yeah, if it's a 2.0 Renaultsport model, either Mk2 or Mk3, you're going to need to buy or fabricate some tooling to align the gears for the timing belt.

It's not easy and it's not cheap to get done. I think Renault themselves charge in excess of £700 for a cambelt and specialists aren't far behind. TBH, I wouldn't risk an non-specialist independent garage touching the head on an RS Clio.

If it's a 1.4 Mk2 Phase 1, fill yer boots. They're a piece of piss.

Let us know which it is.

On my rs clio to have the cambelt and pulleys replaced, dephaser pulley and aux belt cost me £1000 at mates rates at a Renault specialist

Absolute nightmare, basically have to take the engine out to replace the belt, there's sod all room In the engine bay. The cambelt kit alone is near on £200 just to order! Their locking kit for the timing is about that too

Not sure how bad it is on other models though

Lol'd at some of the posts in here.

I'm a Renault (well, Renaultsport) specialist.

If you're local to Essex, Let me know.

FYI, I've never come across a 2.0 F4R with a head gasket gone, even on 220k. I'm betting 1.2 8v or 1.4 16v.

£1000 is how much Renault charge pretty much, I charge £610 depending on what the customer wants. Belt kit is only £96 ish trade. Retail is circa £180.

They are not the only car manufacturer to use "floating" pulleys, and the timing tools only have to be Genuine Renault items, as none of the others are strong enough (Not-hardend!)

Anyway, post what engine it is, and I'll even give advice.

I'd rather drain the coolant.
