Aluminium oxidises - but the layer of oxide prevents further air and moisture getting to the metal, thus meaning more oxidation doesn't occur.

As for painting over rust, imle, scrupulous preparation is essential regardless of the paint brand used. And even then shit goes bad.

Hi All,

Two questions . (I count 4 question marks)

I don't think aliminume rusts , does it ? Some on the net say it does. (as pointed out above, it oxidises quickly and basically seals itself, which is a reason we use aluminium)

my car subframe (this is general bike chat) is heavily rusted (then it isn't aluminium) which I took it off and painted it using hammerite direct to rust. Isn't the manufacture applying some sort of material to prevent it from rusting ? (You're thinking of galvanised metal which is, I believe, the act of coating steel with zinc to stop the oxygen getting in)
if so I guess it has lost it effect due to aging (Depends. Is it a grey import? Some vehicles for the foreign market are galvanised less or not at all because they don't have to cope with the water and salt that UK car are subjected to - I'm now assuming your subframe is steel)

I guess that also means my paint layer will not lost long and will need to be repainted , right ? (Rust is like cancer - leave a tiny bit behind and it'll just keep growing)

if I paint over a rust using direct to rust , does it absorb and dissolve the rust or it will prevent it from further rust ? (There are rust treatments available but none are a substitute for cutting it out and replacing with fresh metal)

thanks

Rust is the name usually given to the oxidisation of ferrous metals, i.e., metals with an iron content.

Aluminium, as someone has already said, oxidises forming a protective layer over the component.

If you've got rust a wire brush, some coarse sand paper to flatten it back as much as possible and a bottle of K-Rust is the best bet short of replacing the metal. Then you can paint hammerite over it.
