So I braved the commute into Soho this morning after a couple of practise runs yesterday. Apart from being a bit of a faff in the morning, raining, and gettin changed in the bogs at work, it went well.

It takes a bit less time than the tube, about 30 minutes all in from when I leave home until I reach the office, so quite pleased. Compared to 40+ minutes, being crammed into a banker's armpit on the central line.

I used the Q Park in Chinatown, which is free for bikes, the door locked behind me and I don't have a ticket. am I walking home?

They'll be an emergency button there. I'm sure of it. Otherwise, gang rape.

You should try using the solo m/c bays in the streets. It costs around £13 a month but it still beats zone 4 travelcard in my case Mr. Green

My sense of direction is poor so GPS on a phone with navigation app that won't kill the battery to use it is a godsend. For my 25 mile commute into work I used it exclusively for the first three weeks so I didn't get lost in rural towns etc.

Getting lost is part of the fun, the trick is to only do it on the way back in good weather.

On my first commute I spent 45min on google map learning all the path from home to work, rain man style...only to discover that half the streets were closed due to construction work Thumbs Up

This. Found my way somehow back onto Oxford street and half of the turnings were closed.

Literally missed one turning and ended up MILES away from home. what should have been 35 minutes at most, turned into about an hour and 30 minutes...

Oh well, more road miles done all the same.

I remember my first commute. I knew the route well as had driven it a few times before but that didn't prepare me for the congestion you face as soon as you get close to the city during morning rush hour.

I had mastered my filtering skills within a couple of weeks on this particular route.

having said that, this morning was particularly bad. Raining heavy and Shorditch/Bishopsgate was gridlock, there were cars doing u-turns all over the place.

I'm around that area, next to Cavendish Square off of Oxford Street.

You'll soon learn your way around, and get used to London backstreets. Half the time most turnings are closed / one way / dead ends / roadworks.

So... out of Q Park Chinatown, onto Shaftesbury Ave. DO a U Turn cos its left hand turn only Evil or Very Mad

Then take the NEXT right... all the way back to Trafalgar. I can't go wrong!

Update, finally got round to my mate's and had a gander at his 2006 R1; lovely thing, had a sat on it and felt very racey (i.e. uncomfortable) but he swears its quite comfy for what it is.

Went for a quick ride round Greenwich peninsula and was hilarious; he'd twitch the throttle and be gone half a mile down the road to the next set of lights; i'm wringing the neck on my poor Vara and eventually come up behind after an hour or so...

Damn I want a bigger bike now.

Still a bit jittery on the work commute, no serious close calls (touch wood) but generally quite nervy, filtering between buses and large dump trucks does wake me up in the morning. Being overtaken by way too many mopeds for my liking though, but hopefully that will pass, and i'll become better at the old filtering lark.
