Quick question ...

Been out on my new bike a lot, cramming 700 miles in the first week and everything seemed fine but then last Sunday I got a shooting pain in my right arm - not when riding, but when I was at home doing something mundane like picking up my phone.

No particular movement seems to always get it and I can pretty much move the arm around no problem but after it getting better on its own I pointed at something in a shop yesterday and BOOM searing toothache style pain in the arm again.

No back or shoulder problems either.

Just wondering if this is a common thing with adjusting to a new bike or racking up the miles, or if I've just been on xhamster too much.

Cheers!

Keep light on the bars and try moving a little on the seat when you get to a junction or a clear straight road.
I often do a quick check over the shoulder and briefly stand up. (Possibly an offence).
Check that the brake lever is in line with your wrist when sat in your normal position. You don't want your wrist bent down or worse pointing up.
Position should look like this.

My guess is it's a new bike and you're gripping the bars too tight.

Are the handlebars straight?
Sounds silly, but if one bar is slightly out to the other, you may not notice, but your muscles do!
However, as above; set bar position to most comfy; set lever angles to fall to finger.
Find your 'seat', stay loose and relax.

Generally if I have a spell away from the bike I get some aches when I start riding again. It reminds me I have to raise the bars. Yet after a week of riding I sort of get into the groove and fit the bike. Other common ache is neck/shoulders, due I take it to helmet and wind resistance.

I have had similar problems in the past, a "cramp buster" sorted it at the time. Be very careful when you fit it, if it is too high you cant shut the throttle when you brake.

However I now only use it on long motorway runs, best £5 I have spent on the bike, apart from fuel of course!

What they all said. Light hands. Unless you're actually turning, you don't need any input on the bars. Crampbuster. Get the missus to do anything requiring tight gripping and repetitive wrist action.

What is a cramp buster, how does it work?
I get really bad cramp in my right hand, even on relatively short journeys

Cheers one and all for ideas.

Rog no RSI help from the other half tonight since she accused me of "eyeing up that girl outside the pub" whilst out on pillion today. Quite how she could see where I was looking, through my illegal tinted visor, sitting directly behind me while my head was facing forward - is beyond me. Not that I was anyway Laughing

That's because you're gripping too tight. Seriously - this is almost certainly the cause. Think of it as a case of resting your hands on the bars, rather than *around* them. This can help to ensure that you're not white knuckle riding.

It's a plastic tab that sits on top of the grip and makes it easier to hold the throttle on by resting your hand on it. They come in various guises, like...
https://shop.crampbuster.com/assets/images/Bar_CB1.jpg

Very simple, very clever, very work. It rotates freely in the opposite direction so that you can get it positioned correctly or just move it out of the way for around town if you feel the need (I don't).

I wouldn't ride without one any more, not on any lengthy trip where I have to hold the throttle on.

You have a cbr125 right? I would always get cramp or numbing in my right hand when i first got it. Turned out i was gripping too hard on the handlebar.

I had a simerler problem when I first got my XJ. I just rotated the bars back a little, say 3 degrees and it just changed the angle enough that my hands were at a relaxed straight angle with palms parralel with the grips. I bet your problem is something simerler. There's plenty of room for adjustment when you think about it. The bars can be rotated, the levers as well and the bars can be moved forward slightly and the brake lever adjusted nearer or further from the throttle grip. Experiment.

Can I adjust the handlebars on my CBR125?

Maybe not so much as I think the CBR has clip-ons so not so much room to adjust them. Have a look at how they're fitted.

Not by much.

You should be able to sort it out. Next time you're out, try to make a conscious effort to relax. In a straight line, on an unbent bike, you really can sit up and take your hands off the bars. Granted, I've found it trickier with clip-ons (my GPz bikes) than straight bars, but you can do it.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned but could help - don't put your weight on the bars. Your body weight should be carried by your legs and arse, think about gripping the tank with your knees and keeping your abdomen firm. It'll happen naturally after a while.

Also, do the funky chicken. Occasionally flap your arms about as you ride along, you might get some funny looks but it helps relieve the tension if you're holding on too tight.

I had lots of pain in my hands in my first few weeks of riding. Stopped me playing guitar for a while. Combination of gripping the bars to tight and vibrations. Swapped hard old grips for some progrips, changed bar end weights, and gripped less hard. Note holding firmly onto big squishy foam grips can cause similar pain. I still get some pain if i've been on an epic ride with lots of very hard braking, but takes some doing.
