Looking to go over to Europe this year again, and am looking for suggestions on places to go.

Usually I choose big cities and touristy places and focus on getting to that place (and spending as much time in the destination as possible) instead of actually enjoying the roads, journey, scenery, etc. Sort of using the roads as a commute rather than part of the adventure.

However, this year I want to head down to the south of France and the Med, spend some time by the sea and head back up again, but cant think of which route to take.

I will be getting the ferry to Ijmuiden (outside Amsterdam) and heading south from there.

The only stipulations I have are: visit Luxembourg, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Monaco. (Liechtenstein is a maybe and can be forgotten about if it is going too far out of the way).

Ideally I want the trip to be as cheap as possible so avoiding tolls would be great, but I'm not going to waste the trip by going out of the way to avoid them.

Cheers

P.S - despite saying that I am going for the roads this year, I would also like to visit places too.

If you want to avid the toll then that looks easy enough. South through Holland and a bit of Belgium then Luxembourg. You can stay on the German side of the border heading south to Switzerland then south into Italy and south to Monaco. Now if that was me and wanting to bimble/stop to sight see and take in nice roads i would split that over four days riding hitting Monaco on day four.

Here is a start missing French Tolls. Now just find the nice roads down. I take it each destination is a stop over.

The route above will take you on the E43 motorway through Switzerland so you`ll need a Swiss Vignette, so why not swing west of Switzerland and pick up the top of the Route de Grande Alps near Genève and ride down to Menton? That way you can at least tick off Switzerland. But I`d avoid Monaco unless you like being stuck in traffic jams, for the sake of €5 its far easier to hit the toll road and ride around it. Then work you way back around From the south of France via route Napoleon, Route de Cretes and the Vosages

Route de Rastefond, near the Italian border, 3rd highest road in Europe at 2800 metres. Not too far from Monaco/Monte Carlo and Italian border.

Go in September, so still OK weather and French kids back in school.

Take pics Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
