Just ordered some new gear so I can have removeable liners in them and I like it all apart from the bottom of the trousers are a not as skinny a fit as my current ones, even when I tighten the velcro.

My concern is that in a spill, they will slide up and get rash on my legs. I have half shin high boots and the thighs are pretty snug so would only really be the top shin and calf area. Anyone have any experience of this or am I worrying over nothing?

TLDR - my new trousers arent very tight at the bottom, should I stop worrying or buy new?

If you fall off in excess of 50mph, expect textiles to wear through in a few places. Much better off than no protection at all, but protection probably won't be total.

When you're sliding down the road, the angles and ends of your body are what's most likely to be in contact with the road. Ass, knees, hips, elbows, etc. Your trousers would have to roll all the way past your knees to be a serious risk IMO, as it's likely your knees or ass and ankles will be on the road rather than your calves.

I guess you could always use some decent strength elastic bands if you're concerned about them rolling up in a crash, but doubt they'd do much in a crash actually to stop them rolling up. Imo get some better gear that makes you feel confident and safe. No point wearing something that's designed to protect you, and still feeling like you wouldn't be protected if you came off.

I like how my RST leathers zip up at the ankles, can't slide them up at all once you're strapped in. It's a shame I had to send them back and get one size smaller though because these assholes are taking forever, 3 weeks and still no trousers!

Sew an elasticated loop on the end of each trouser leg and hook that under your foot to stop them riding up.

I crashed last Friday and my very loose fitting alpinestars drystar trousers didn't slide up so I wouldn't worry about it to much. Worry more about the quality of what you got my trousers barely showed any damage at 35-ish mph down the road, my cheap tuzo branded textile jacket pretty much disintegrated.

Funnily enough, its the drystars andes gear I'm talking about. They fit fine round the waist and thighs (big glutes from training) but I'm thinner down the bottom so maybe they are expecting a fatter leg!

Thinking about what was said above, i should be sliding on my ankle and boot and then the arse area, not sure much of the exposed lower leg would physically be able to touch the ground. I really like the fluo jacket and didnt want mismatched gear, so may just keep it. If it bothers me that much, I'll sew the elasticated bit to go under my foot as said above.. good idea Thumbs Up

I have the drystar express version, quality is excellent I never believed expensive gear was anything more than paying for a name, but seeing how these held up compared to a cheap jacket has altered my opinion a lot.

I reckon it would take some skill to have a spill and slide along the road in such a way that the bottoms of your trousers ride up past the top of your boots...

I'm not saying it hasn't or won't happen but I suspect the chances are so small it's not worth worrying about Smile

depends on what boots and trousers you have,
I have some RST boots and Trousers and the trousers by design arent extra long, these ride up at times a little so if I was sliding down the road I could imagine they would move a fair bit,
Im actually looking at my own trousers in the same way as the OP,
My old textiles were longer then leather ones seems to be.

I wouldn't worry too much, been down the road in some cheap bikersgearuk textiles (baggy as hell but velcroed shut) with a foot caught under the bike, so dragged foot first. Textiles stayed in place but wore through at the knee. I got away with a mild sprain where my foot twisted ways it wasn't supposed to. waterproof textiles need to fit over boots so they will always be a bit loose. Velcro them so the zip is secure and see how far up they will actually go and where you actually have to catch them to to do that.

Wash them with Nikwax and then use the Nikwax spray on stuff afterwards. Cheaper than new ones. Thumbs Up

Think the problem with these ones is the velcro doesnt go round far enough either. Might see if i can attach a bit more to make it more snug. Decided to keep them

Look for extra strong thread (sometimes sold as topstitch which is thick for decorative purposes, but not all topstich thread is extra strong). I have a few items with extra velcro or hook swapped for loop in the case of glove straps. It's not too hard, try to find a way to do the stitching that doesn't go through the waterproof membraine, even if that means hand stitching. That said my local tailoring shop have opened textile jackets linings, restitched a seam, and closed up the lining and charged me about a fiver.
