Hi all,

I got back in to biking over the last 4 years!,
The wife has not been to bothered about them or that interested!,

Anyway was in my local Honda dealer the other week & the wife looked at the MSX 125 & loves it!
Now she is only 4f10" so could just about get here foot down!

Ok i've no problem her getting one, but with it being a new model there isn't any cheap one's!
is there any small/low bikes out there she can train on ?

I said to her do a CBT on a scooter or something just to get used to being on two wheels before we buy one ?

Thanks Steve

Hey Stevo,
I am just 1/4 inch shy of 5ft and I have a CBR125, I can get both feet down tiptoes and one foot down comfortably at lights etc.
I also sat on a YBR125 and was quite comfortable on that too.
Love my CBR though Very Happy

It's mostly inside leg that matters.

The other possibilities in the 125 world are cruiser style bikes, but (inB4Tef) they're not ideal dynamically. The GN125, CM125 and Chinese copies like the Lexmoto Vixen are a compromise that might work.

You could buy a cheap 125 like a CG or YBR, drop the forks through the yokes a touch, wind the preload off the rear suspension and if it's still too high, consider hacksawing a loop off of the springs, like we did in the ghetto in the ghetto.

Never thought about dropping the front forks a tad !
& could get a spare rear spring to mess with on my CBR ?

Yup, springs are just... springs. I've seen shortened springs for some bike models, or you could try a custom parts shop. Used to be you could go in and say "Mk II Escort, 2" shortened" and some leathery little man in a brown coat would disappear into the back room, then emerge with some dusty coils that would magically suit your purpose.

Policemen used to be much more polite as well.

We have a Yamaha SR which is a nice low bike and great for learners.

OK its a cruiser style but it is great fun to ride. I love riding it around the yard.

Or longer dog bones. The bits of metal that connects suspension to the bike. Although TBH I'm not sure how CBR/YBR suspension is actually connected to the bike, I'm just reciting from memory.

Another trick is to remove seat, remove cover, shave a little of the padding off at the sides, recover seat and replace. This makes the seat a tad narrower and in theory easier to get feet on ground.

A lass in my bike club is under 5 ft. She rides a Triumph T595 with no saddle (just a plank with some foam on on the frame rails) and re-worked side plastics.

I did see a VERY short asian lass at a rally once riding a CCM supermoto. She set off in a Mike Hailwood crossed-leg style, getting on and off the bike each time she stopped.

Essentially she'd stand on the left of the bike, put her left foot on the peg, engage first then stand up on that peg and ride away, swinging her leg up over the bike as she did so. Her slow riding was amazingly good to avoid having to stop and get off.

I would recommend a Cbr too. I had one and although i'm 6ft all my shorter friends sat on it just fine.

The best thing to do would be to go to a dealership and try on a couple of different bikes. Most of them are not as large as you would expect.

Yeah from my experience the SR125 is not that much be more cruiser than something like a GS125 or CG125. The bars are higher and the seat lower, but not stupidly and I'd call it very mild for a factory custom. It pretty well handles just as well as a CG etc, and Yamaha must have been taking drugs when they specced the front brake!

It's almost stupidly sharp and powerful for a light 125 with 12bhp and skinny tyres and forks!

It's a shame the bigger Yamaha Custom bikes don't ride and stop as well IMO.

I think the SR's horrid, slow (even for a 125), awful over bumps and just lacking compared to other Jap' 125's. Only thing going for them is that they're cheap Smile

Sounds like a winner then, for the wife ! Cool

I loved my SR.
It was super easy to ride, very comfortable, and could almost pull u-turns by itself.
I could get it over 60mph if I laid flat on the tank. It would do 55 easily uphill with a pillion on it.
I did most of my learning on it and had it for around 8 months, put 1000's of miles on it.

It certainly wasn't a speed demon but that's what big bikes are for Smile

I would have another as a run-around, and I smile and remember mine with fondness every time I see one.
I really did ♥ my SR125.

I know it won't be a popular suggestion, but there are plenty of road legal 125 pit bikes which will cost a pittance compared to the MSX. Buy, learn, sell to chav. Buy MSX once in love with 2 wheels.
