Hello everyone

I had to call RAC as my bike stalled. It seems unless I keep the revs up, the engine shut off. After the RAC jump started it, and took some reading he came to the conclusion that is the charging system ( Alternator ) that it is at fault. And they offered to tow me home for £169 ( 67 miles) Shocked

I didn’t take the offer and got a Jump starter pack from Halfords for €59 and after few hic ups on the road it did the job!! Mr. Green Had to keep the revs up....even 20mph wasn`t enough to keep the engine going.. Embarassed

Does anyone who big is the job and the likely cost ? it is a HONDA CBR 600 2000

Thank you

Likely to be the regulator being a Honda.

Best to confirm the problem before splashing out.

IIRC if you rev the bike and measure the voltage across the battery and get much more than 14.5v then the reg/rec is dead. Best to wait for confirmation on that.

Thanks for the comments

Bizarrely it started ok yesterday Shocked ..seems as long as I keep the light off..the engine wont cut off.. having read few similar posts on here, I just remembered lot of heats come from underneath the bike so that might be the alternator being burned out..so the RAC man could be wright and I need an alternator..I will get the testing for the reg/rec anyway to eliminate it ..Thanks

When my CBR's alternator died, I think it was around £90 to replace it at a mechanic.

found used one here

£90 and a MOSFET regulator rectifier so it's near invincible. Make a note of it for when the Honda one blows up in a few weeks time.

It's actually a CBR600F design flaw, they put the reg/rec on the right hand side enclosed inside the tailpod, where no airflow can get to it.

The theory was it was supposed to use the subframe as a heatsink, except the engine makes frame super hot (mine did)

If you bought a genuine honda reg/rec without fins it will probably burn out again, a cheapo solution is to buy a CPU fan and heat sink and mount it to the reg rec.

A better solution is to put it under the undertray where airflow will get to it.

You paid over the odds btw as my CBR600 used a 700ruble one taken from a ZX10R They're mostly the same.
