Stalled my bike as I was parking up after a ride a little while ago (ride was over an hour) and then it wouldn't start up (bike is a Honda CBR600F 2003), battery was low so put the battery on a charger (first time I've done that) and then it was fine for 1 more ride but same problem again.
Checked with a voltmeter after I had charged the battery and it all seemed ok, 14.4 volts when held at 5k rpm but then it happened again, bought a small voltmeter to attach to the bike semi-permanently to see what volts the battery has while I ride and at the start of rides its fine and charging but then it for no reason stops charging, it shows 12.x volts no matter how I ride (idle or revving)

Got a new battery after a mechanic told me that was the problem (already thought that but wanted to make sure the charging system wasnt the real problem as apparently that's a common issue on CBR's)
But today it did the same thing, stopped charging on my way home, I kept riding and made sure I didn't stall then when I got home it wouldn't start again.

Help

Sounds pretty much like the reg/rec is on its way out...

Here's a rather handy troubleshooting chart : https://www.offwidth.co.uk/bike/general/electrical_fault_finding_2.pdf

I was thinking that but wasn't sure because the bike does charge the battery sometimes

Edit: read through that PDF and will go through the steps tomorrow when the battery has been charged, thanks that is a really helpful guide

More likely its the connector block Stator to reg/rec. These overheat with time, burning the contacts. Might work OK when cold but soon heats up and gives poor / no continuity.

Used the guide posted above this morning and got to page 2:

ac voltage measured across the yellow wires coming from the stator and all 3 readings were very low (1 volt or slightly less when revved to 5k). So it looks like I need a new stator Sad

I am right aren't I?

Not sure exactly of the correct reading for your bike, but mine was around minimum of 60v AC per wire (think I got 80 odd).

So yes, 1 is bad. Means a faulty generator.

EDIT:
Just to be clear, you did have the multimeter set to AC?

Yes, multimeter has 600 and 200 v ac settings and I checked on both just to be sure.

Would a faulty generator explain my situation perfectly? Bike has 14v at the battery when started up and revving and then appears not to charge after a while and then just by switching the bike off and on again it goes back to 14v for a while again

Sorry mate, I have no idea, I followed Suzuki's SV650 Manual troubleshooting guide with help from the BCF massive Smile

But if you r/r is not getting any AC (ie around 250-400v from the 3 phase yellow wires) then your battery won't be getting any DC.
